The Anime and Manga Thread v48

Rummors on JJBA steel ball run anime adaptation. News expected on April 12.

Edge of Tomorrow was based on this series.
I know. When Warner Bros. bought the rights back in 2010, I was so intrigued by the premise that I read the light novel back then. The ending is very tragic. I'm glad the movie didn't strictly follow the novel but disappointed they wussed out of using All You Need is Kill as the title.

Solo Leveling season 2 episode 11

Wow. Music was awesome, especially the song in that key scene.

Plot armor saved the Korean S-rank hunters. The Ant King was beheading the Japanese hunters while giving the Korean hunters a different beatdown.

Even in the manhwa I'm pissed that mc chose to wait. He had shadows following everyone there. If you've read the manhwa we could talk about other source of frustrations. Lol!

I found that strange too. Why wait so damn long to arrive and why not the instakill like the Ant King did to the Japan hunters.

tbf, the series is Korean and it's rare for them to represent Japan in a good light. Japan lost 10 S-rankers. That's like losing all your nuclear submarines and an aircraft carrier.

Yeah but it's just a minor complaint for me. That episode was terrific overall. As I said before, it's the build-up and tension that's what makes this series so good. Jin-woo's action scenes are entertaining but he's so OP that it's not that super satisfying.

Aoashi is better than Blue Lock if you want story driven football anime.

+1 on Aoashi. I really hope they come out with a new season of the anime. My 9yo son loves soccer. His favorite is Captain Tsubasa out of the 3. He's ahead of me since he finished the junior youth arc that I have yet to start.
Started watching Ao Ashi. Just finished the first episode. So far so good. I like that part where the troll kid felt guilty and confessed everything. Unexpected.

Bung Gu's death hits so hard even in the manhwa. Fuck you Jinwoo. Lol

If you know, you know!

damn, solo leveling is so good I can't really get through 5 minutes without rewinding to see some of the epic scenes over and over.

The broadcast was on a 10 minute delay. (From the novel)
He didn’t have a shadow on Byung gyu.
I'm just saying, he should've signed up when they were recruiting. There's a reason this was their 3rd attempt. Guy wanna play hero ball.

Not really. He thought they could handle it.

The team would have been fine if there wasn’t an Ant King. He believed with the level of S ranks on the mission they would be ok. His mom just got out of a coma and didn’t want to worry her. That was one of the big reasons he didn’t participate, he wanted to be with his family. When the signal from Goto disappeared and the broadcast caught up it was too late for him to stop casualties.

Any recommendations similar to Tower Dungeon? I also like Berserk. Manga or anime recommendations
I hadn't heard of it before, but the author, Tsutomu Nihei, has written a bunch of well received series: Blame!, Biomega, and Knights of Sidona probably being the three biggest. Stuff from other authors you might want to look into: Dorohedoro, Shin Angyo Onshi (Blade of the Phantom Master), Blade of the immortal.

Some webtoons that might scratch a similar itch (though not all of them are dark fantasy, and they're all ongoing with a varying number of chapters ranging from around 20 to 160):

Thank you. I am familiar with most Tsutomu Nihei's work but thank you for compiling the webtoons. I admittedly havent read more than one webtoons, ever but I'll take the time to sift through these

So, some thoughts beyond just the synopsis:

The World After The Fall - This style of action series is very common among webtoons, but this one does it better than most with a protag who doesn't dick around. Very much a, 'nah, fuck that noise, ima stab you now,' kind of guy.

Return of the Mad Demon - Martial arts with a take-no-shit protagonist who is...perhaps a little off his rocker. Really a FAFO kind of main character.

The Stellar Swordmaster - Just a solid dark fantasy. It's not brutal in the way of Berserk, but it doesn't shy away from some of the more unseemly aspects of a medieval fantasy setting.

Myst, Might, Mayhem - The protagonist is brutally pragmatic. Evil, even. But there's no mustache twirling and somebody else almost always starts it. It's an interesting change of pace.

The Knight Only Lives Today - Groundhog Day-esque timeloops. Fun, good fight scenes, interesting cast.

Bad Born Blood - This one has been developing an interesting setting where the MC has to deal with a '...are we the bad guys?' revelation and it's not pulling any punches on that premise. One of the better series I've tried so far this year.

The Regressed Mercenary Has a Plan - So, yeah, it's yet another regression plotline. The big selling point for this series is that the fight choreography is phenomenal.
