Out of all those, Luque's was the most impressive against a good JJ practitioner. Great work from being in serious trouble to finding an opening during the scramble. High level stuff there.

A lot of the others were just half dead opponents giving up easy subs.

Yeah..... maybe. But it wasn't

The ref or commission getting the outcome incorrect shouldn't preclude a fighter from being eligible from SOTY.

The arm was dislocated by a submission.
The correct ruling for a fight stopped due to injury from submission is technical submission.

If you are keeping it out of the voting you are doing so for the wrong reasons. Those little donkey kong punches did not stop the fight and you know it.

Also, what is the point of selecting a sub of the year? To honor the fighter who got the best sub or to honor the decision of a shitty official and commission?

Was fuckin brutal, especially with the Donkey Kong pounds on his head to add.

Thanks for posting. That sub was badass on 2 levels.

Obviously Paul Craig is a bad due on the ground and his BJJ is lethal.

But respect for Jamahal Hill. That crazy son of a bitch tried to keep fighting through that. Maybe not the brightest health decision, but tough as nails to not quit there.

What an amazing year for submissions in MMA! As a grappling enthusiast going through this list really made me excited for the new year. Nominees were decided for various reasons ( the pure shock, the transition into, broken limb, going to sleep, etc) there are a few other honorable mentions that I will add later. VOTE!!!! VOTE!!!! VOTE!!!!

Chiesa went through one of the most sorry submission fortune changes in recent memory, but Muniz gets my vote. Just shocking that he submitted Jacare like that. Broke his arm and retired him, to boot

This was actually ruled a TKO
