You may have heard of the confirmed death of a Tesla driver who was running on autonomous driving mode. It's technically a beta version (there is a reason why the large manufacturers AND google do not have an official autonomous driving feature yet).

There was a second bad accident.

Statistically speaking, autonomous Teslas are still not worse than normal cars or drivers. But now the investigations begin and I fear it may not end up pretty for Tesla.

I also wonder how they solved some practical issues in the software. I mean, there are ethical dilemmas when dealing with autonomous cars. Imagine a situation where a kid runs on the street and stopping in time is impossible - you only have the alternative to run over the grandma on the sidewalk. There may be good utilitarian arguments to make this choice, but are we ready as a society to do so?

That's why I will never get a self driving car. I want to be in control of the wheel. Plus I couldn't afford those anyway.

You probably could not afford a car with an airbag 25 years ago.

You would be wrong! I have an 02 van with airbags! 255,000 miles but it's got airbags. I'm not sure if they work;) You're gonna laugh. But my van is in the shop. I think it's leaking transmission fluid. Reverse is not working all the time.

Tesla is jumping the gun here with autonomous cars. Instead they should focus on getting their regular electric cars cheaper and make it more appealing and feasible for the joe schmos, and not the trustafarians.

Edge cases arrise in real world application thst are not accounted for in theoretical designs

Eventually tesla's self driving functionality will work at a safety level humans simply cannot reach

I won't even let my wife drive when we go out. No way in hell I'd trust this technology

A lot of different companies are investing in autonomous driving.

Google for example.

Accidents like this are bad PR for Tesla for sure, but there is no question that driverless cars are coming and car companies are going to have to position themselves accordingly.

Meh, no matter who or what is driving, physics still come into play. In the accident where the guy was killed, I believe the truck pulled out in front of him. If the car couldn't stop in time, no way the driver would have been able to.

You can't count.

The car did not stop because it believed the truck was a giant billboard.

To be clear, I fully believe in autonomous driving. Once the technology is ready in a couple years. Not as a beta.

Any ideas as to why Tesla is being nailed to the cross as the High & Holy King of All Cars with Autopilot?

Edit: Thanks MASShole

If another person on the road fucks up bad enough, the car will get in situations where it's literally impossible to avoid the collision, regardless if a person is driving or the car is driving itself. People are basically holding autonomous cars to a flawless standard that's impossible to achieve. It's shitty that Tesla is going to get sued and blamed for every accident, regardless if their technology is involved or not.

Nice try TS, I'm not withdrawing my deposit for the Model 3 :-D

I can't see this working on country roads. But I don't know the technology either.

Any ideas as to why Tesla, as a privately owned company, is being nailed to the cross as the High & Holy King of All Cars with Autopilot?

It's not privately owned. Stock ticker: TSLA

Cant you automatically regain control by moving the wheel? I trust the technology but not enough to sleep my way through.
