Law Tennessee doctor denies treatment to unmarried pregnant woman

This doctor is punishing the patient for being unwed. It's not a case where the doctor might feel uncomfortable due to religious reasons. It's a lifestyle disagreement. It is fine if you live in a metropolitan area with many doctors. It's not the same if you live in an area with a lack of practitioners or the person is underinsured. Some people can't afford to take multiple days off to take care of their issues.

Denying a patient due to lifestyle differences is silly but they did change the laws for that state. I think it opens a can of worms for other nonsense. Best practice in scenario is at least refer out to another clinic that is close by that is willing to take these patients and if that isn't available then the practitioner has to take up the case.

She is not far from the Virginia border and stated that she would rather not run the risk in the State if any medical facility can do the same thing on a whim.
So instead of seeing if this was an anomaly, she just went over state lines?

If you had a sure thing that wasn't very far, or something that could be changed at someone's discretion that was close, I'm making the drive to the thing that I know will happen. This is how logic works.

Then what is the problem? She assumed all Tennessee doctors would think the same, didn’t verify and then found someone who didn’t have an issue?

She is supposed to tour Doctor's offices as a pregnant woman to see who, in her State, is going to arbitrarily discriminate against her Marital status?
I mean, when my wife was pregnant she went to a few doctors to see who we wanted to help with the delivery. I don’t get what the issue is here, she obviously went to another doctor so what is the problem? Just that she assumed all Tennessee doctors would be equally idiotic?

So if that’s the law he has a right to refuse and she has a right to get another doctor.

Yeah this is the EXACT mentality that allowed for "whites only" restaurants and sh*t.

You can be a bigot, or a religious zealot all you want. You can even stand on the corner with a bigotry sign, or be a bigot in Church if your Church is about that life. But the moment you must acquire State licensing to practice your business, that sh*t needs to end.

You let people do what they want and let people refuse to support people and business like that with their time and money.

No one said he doesn’t. Denying care is not expression. He’s in a special place of trust in society and should not be allowed to deny care based on a whacky fringe opinion

If there’s no medical reason on for him to deny treatment then he shouldn’t be denying care based on anyone’s lifestyle or beliefs. I agree if he didn’t want to prescribe trans patients hormone blockers or perform abortions, but this is not the same thing

Like I said you let people decide and not support him with their time or money.

Right, you guys went to see who YOU wanted, not who wouldn't give your wife treatment.

The self centeredness is astounding. It's basically fuck them this ain't happening to me. Then piss and moan when it inevitably happens to them.
I've come to the conclusion that you are dead on , nothing will happen that they won't sign off on , even this Epstein stuff , they are starting to fall in line

They will excuse anything up until it affects them and even then some will still justify it , you see that already as well , people who've had loved ones deported still defending trump , farmers who are facing bankruptcy still defending their vote .

There is no bottom for many of them , too many.

How do people support this shit?

It's obviously wrong and obviously should be illegal. A doctor is supposed to help people, not deny them medical care based on some bs reasons. The irony of the doctor being a "good Christian" is just the final touch of this ridiculous situation.

Was there only one doctor in the area?
She likely waited weeks to months for this appointment. She likely will now face the same wait at another office to establish care. There is no way she could have anticipated this reaction as it is completely unreasonable.

If something is wrong with her pregnancy and goes undetected for a time now, that right there should be a huge fat malpractice suit.

Welcome to theocracy.

The craziest thing about the anti-Muslim screed from the past was just how much the Christian right wanted to implement the same things. Fast forward a few years and we're seeing it in effect in multiple examples. This is just the latest but it won't be the last.

I don't know the Christian version of Sharia law but I'm going to abuse the shit out of the term once I learn it.

Oh I am both against this doctor and the law no question. It definitely doesn’t take that long when you’re pregnant to get an appointment though.
