Taking Beatings & Forgetting Names

Meh.

No big deal. All that's important is that you're improving your grip strength, regardless of what you use.

Notes: Nice little workout to finish up the year. No sparring, so my yearly total (well, since May 26th when I started keeping track) is 245 rounds. Should have been a lot more...must try not to take months off at a time in 2010. Decent year. Competed and went 1-1 in amateur competition, improved my skills by a lot, sparred with a world-class pro, and became much more competent at the sport.

Started the year off with a nice 3 mile run in the rain, and some shadow boxing. I always have liked running when there is a light rain. Just feels good.

I like how you fully turn your jab over, makes it stiff.

If you make it down to 152, Id say you will be fighting guys shorter than you. I think you would have more opportunities to fight in the inside, which means more opportunities uppercuts and hooks to the body

That'd be cool. I like moving forward typically, but being the taller guy kind of gives you the option of what range you want to fight at. Love body work. Ever since I took a hard liver shot from a visiting pro I have been trying to return the favor to everybody else, haha.

Watching fighters shadowbox at a mild clip is always interesting to me. Give a little peek into their skillset and their creativity, and a voyeurs look at what they're stressing to improve and refine.

Always tough to comment on them without seeing the feet, but looks good, man. Careful about the right hand drifting down when you're working uppercuts.

Also: you jab funny! I turn it over a lot, too, but you're really corking the elbow up and out, whereas mine is more like a downward chop led by a shoulder turn with a big twist at the very end. Not saying this is wrong, of course, just different and interesting.

Thanks for the tip on the right hand whilst uppercutting.

Yeah, the jab looks funny to me too. For a long while, I wasnt turning it over much at all, and it looks to me like I am over compensating on it now to break that habit. I dont think that elbow flare is a good thing though, so I may have traded one bad habit for another. Over-correcting seems to be the story of my life...:icon_neut

It looks similar to the way I've seen some of the muaythai guys around here jab, and they're doing it to add more shoulder/arm "pop" into the jab to compensate for less foot/hip drive. My coach was pretty adamant about having the elbows tucked while jabbing, so if he caught us flaring at all we'd be sent to the wall, and jab with our left shoulder touching the wall for rounds so that any elbow flare would knock the wall and kick you a little off balance. Had to really focus on turning the torso and circling the right/rear shoulder clockwise to get your proper rear and extension while while keeping the elbow in flawlessly.
