Taking Beatings & Forgetting Names

Too far away? An hour drive is too far away? This is NOR-CAL tournament you are talking about. Boxers from the entire top half of the state but you are un-willing to drive an hour.

Its not the drive so much as I would have to take the week off from work. If it is in San Francisco, I can just let them know Ill be back in a few hours. With Vacaville, all the weigh-in stuff and fights on multiple nights means I would have to take the week off from work, stay in a motel there, etc.

Enright - I was in Asia for a few weeks, and went back to the gym this last week, the same week I got back. It just wasnt eventful. Sparring, bag work, focus mitts, drills. *shrug*

Liquid - Thanks. Actually, didnt have much in the way of blisters. One on the inside of each foot that was getting worse near the end, but nothing debilitating fortunately. Really pretty country up there...

Woke up around 1:30am, so did a few sets of towel pullups. Never tried these before, but they're rad. Really good for finger/hand strength.

Towel Pullus: 3 x 6

Pushups: 1 x 40

And you never called me.

So...I was making the plans for the golden gloves, but it sounds like they may be out in Vacaville again this year. That means it would be too far away to participate in.

I am still playing with the idea, but I am thinking that a new year might call for a new sport. Considering putting western boxing on the backburner for a bit, and taking up Muay Thai and no-gi grappling. The gym that I am looking at even has my boxing coach there for a few days a week. Just potentially looking into the idea of mixing things up and becoming a bit more well-rounded. Thoughts?

Do it, that's funny you are switching and I am switching to more western boxing, but still I say do it man.

Goals & Plans for 1st Quarter of 2010

January - 1 fight near end of month
February - 2 fights
March/April - 1-2 fights leading up to Golden Gloves

December Notes: Basically just going to finish up the year with just skill training and a few LSD runs. Got back to the gym yesterday for the first time in a month due to travel. Not a whole lot of time before the holidays, so will just get back into shape. No focus on extra conditioning or diet changes.

January Notes: I want to compete in the Gloves at 152 pounds, so the plan for January is to get as close to that as possible. I'd like to get down to 155 or so and get my first fight of the year near the end of the month.

February Notes: Maintain weight around 155 pounds, and fight twice.

March Notes: Still up in the air when the regional tournament will be held, so this will either be all dedicated to the gloves, or I will try to get 1-2 more fights in before the start date. Hoping that the fights will be in San Francisco this year instead of all the way out in Vacaville, as that will create some problems.

I'd thought that you had some other concrete goals for your boxing laid out, but it turns out that these were all I was able to find. Do they simply no longer interest you? Some other motivation to drop boxing for MT?

I want to turn open class, and give myself a shot at winning the gloves as a novice.

Theres some other stuff going on that makes me want to give the MT and grappling a go for a while. I would still be doing some boxing, but I need to make some changes and freshen things up a bit.

Try it out. Im still going to compete in boxing but I plan on taking up other things soon while Im at it. I kinda want to do something with group classes, I can get kinda sick with the boxing training structure.

You're now fighting in my weight class. How many fights until you're open and I can start looking for you?

You're also getting into no-gi grappling and Muay thai, and you lift like a total vagina.. Stop trying to be me, missy. You stop that right now.

You always want to beat me up...6 more fights or a golden glove championship away from open class.

Are you training these days? I see more beer drinking and cuddling with the woman in your facebook albums than boxing and fighting lately.

Original Post updated with background and plans for the year.

Some people find the Open class to be easier, because there is more technique involved and less lucky wild fighters. Also, I know this is boxing, but the usa boxing commission also takes ammy MT and kickboxing and mma bouts into consideration, when they make the matchups. They usually ask if you if you have any, in the golden gloves

Hmm. Ambiguous "other stuff" as a motivation, eh? Cute asian girl in the MT class, Martin? :icon_chee

Eh. Go for it. See if you prefer getting kicked in the leg to hooked to the ribs, or having your arm bent the wrong way to getting smothered in a corner. If yes, continue. If no, go back. Seems simple enough.

Brandon does seem to be hitting awfully close to home with the Schatz/MacRea parallels, though. If you keep on track, you should stop training entirely in about a year and the post approximately once a week in other people's logs. :)

Yea I am still training, a LOT of no-gi grappling right now and every tournament I can get my hands on just to stay active and to keep indulging the competitive side of me. I'm starting up at Siam No 1 Muay Thai in the first eek of January, so I'm excited about that. I'm coaching a lot of boxing right now so I'm still keeping the rust off (just barely).

I've got a log on my laptop that I update daily that I'd post up here again, but it's just so boring right now. When I start up at Siam I'll probably be logging again, though.

I'm not sure it actually affects anything. Yes, you have to list that info whenever you get your license renewed, but it doesnt mention that experience anywhere on your passbook. Also, its 9 or less fights to compete in novice, and that is definitely boxing only. It might be different if they were pro MMA or kickboxing.

LOL. The "other stuff" mostly refers to just feeling the need to mix things up. I think I am stagnating a bit, and a new gym and new sparring partners may help.

Nice...I didnt know that you were taking the grappling so seriously. Hows your results been in the tournaments?

Start the log. Do eeet...

Ah, the infamous "mix things" up. Last time I checked the S&P glossary, "mix things up" was defined as "switching to a second set of goals before reaching the first set in an effort to acheive neither." Does it mean the same in the world of fight training? :)

'Fess up and be honest here, Missus; if you can't tell the truth in your own training log, where can you? If boxing is just growing boring, spit it out. If there really is a cute girl in the MT class, post pics. :icon_twis

I'm not really taking it that seriously, which is why I'm diving into a lot of tournaments with a really carefree kind of approach. I've placed 2 out of.. 6 times, with a 2nd and 3rd place finish, but nothing to write home about. My weight class is usually packed so I get 3-4 bouts regardless, and I just want the experience.

It'll be cool though if we both get logs going with our own takes on applying our boxing to muaythai. Good motivation to have you on board, too, and I'm sure we could share some tips and try to help each other with that whole "kicking" thing.

get on the muay thai and grappling chatzy!

in 2010 im going to resume my BJJ training, maintain my muay thai and fight at least once.

also i promise my fight will be decisive. i will make a nice knockout for the fans.
