Strength in Interesting Places

I took videos of all my squat sets today.

Looking at the videos, the form seems fine. The depth is okay- not great, but I don't think you can say there is anything wrong with it (except maybe one or two reps which are only parallel, and really missing that last inch). I expect to get the depth a little bit better over the next few weeks and months, but with low bar and my stance fairly wide, I don't think it will go that much deeper. Now I am comfortable dumping the weight forward, I will definitely be playing with getting right down into the hole and seeing if I can get out- maybe some pause squats.

As I mentioned, 100kg was easy. I guess I have been farting around with lower weights and should be pushing to take it higher a little faster.

As always, comments, criticisms and pointers are welcome.

What do you mean by, "Now I am comfortable dumping the weight forward"? Doesn't your rack have safety bars that will catch the weight if you fail a rep?

BTW, I can't see the videos because they're blocked by my work.

Mornin'! It does have safety bars, but I still have to do the 'bow of shame' to get the bar onto them. Oh, and since you can't see the video... that was a typo above. Honest. It was 200kg, and it was easy. :)

Congrats! Can't wait to see your 200kg squat when I get home!:icon_neut

You should be able to just lower yourself to the saftey bar, right? Unless I'm missing something, I hope you don't plan to good-morning the bar forward onto the hooks from whence you unrack?

Woops! Busted.

I don't quite know what you mean by 'lower myself'. When I am at the very bottom of the squat, the safety bars are still a few inches below the bar. So I simply lean forward with a straight back, while in the very bottom of the squat. I have to lean forward a bit further than is ideal, because the bars are low, but I can do it without any discomfort or feeling of significant pressure on my back.

If you're talking about failing a rep, here is a great thread on how to do it properly. If I misunderstood and you're just talking about re-racking, then accept my most humble apology!

I do what most people in that thread describe, e.g.

The safeties should be set so that they are an inch or so below the bar when you are at your lowest point during the squat. If you fail the rep, slowly lower yourself to the bottom and then lean forward slightly until the safeties support the bar. Then get out of there and hang your head in shame because you failed.

and

I just squat down as far as I can, then lean forward a bit and drop my head and the bar falls/rolls on to the safety bars. That might not work for everyone but I'm just a bit too tall for the rack, so leaning and lowering my head gets the bar low enough to hit the bars.

Was I incredibly unclear? Or is this wrong?

Great info. I didn't know any of this, and honestly was a bit worried about pushing to failure (which i'm afraid i'm getting close to in my program). Add a +1 to the new stuff I'm learning every day.

No, that's right, I must have misunderstood. I thought you were leaning forward to get the bar on the hooks (as opposed to the saftey bar) when failing and I was concerned for your back.

Ah right- that would not be good. Thanks for the concern. And the discussion has passed on good info to LitteringAnd. So it's all good.

This is clearly a log that is all about lifting hard and learning, and not about seeing girls naughty bits.

I think we're all clear that discussions about lifting programmes and how to fail squats safely are all that people could need or want from a log. Compared to that, who'd be interested in images like this?

Or this?

No one, I am sure.

Your lifting is so pathetic...

oops, wrong log..

When I saw this, I was worried that you might have mixed us up and put something complementary/encouraging in STTD's log. Which would clearly have been a sign of the end of the world.

I for one am in this log for the articles.

A few years ago, I acquired a copy of Playboy in order to read an interview with Chuck Liddell. That issue also had a great story about how the World Bank went after Paul Wolfowitz over his girlfriend issue. One of the best magazine articles I've read in years. Not into the 'Girl Next Door' type they have in the magazine, so that article I really do read for the articles.

However, through the gift of the internet, I have been able to acquire French, Italian and Greek Playboy. Hotter women, better photography. And especially with the Greek one, reading the articles is not an option. So that one, yes, it's all about the pictures of naked women.

Who buys playboy nowadays?
I honestly can not recall the last time I held/saw an edition of playboy.

Indeed. I would typically only look at a copy if there was an article I was interested in, or if, hypothetically, a UFC ring girl was posing naked in it. Although in those circumstances, I imagine I would be very disappointed.
