Strength in Interesting Places

and we have to drive right through the most common place for suicide attacks. Rather than go through suicidesville,

My degree is in Public Administration, and I guess at one point I was on the path to become the next JauntyAngle. Sounds like I missed out on a potentially exciting life.:icon_lol:

It may not to be to late! A lot of people go into international development in mid-career or late career. The contracting companies who work for the United States Agency for International Development hire a lot of people straight from government (e.g. from the Treasury, the State Department, the USDA and the state/city governments) and also from academic faculties where they do Public Administration, Public Policy, etc. The firm I work for hires a lot of ex-government people from similar backgrounds, but from all over the world. A lot of people decide to go into volunteer schemes, like the Peace Corps, the UK's VSO or the United Nations Volunteers programme, and that frequently leads to paid work in the sector. Or they start off working in the non-profit sector at home, e.g. an educational or urban poverty charity, and that leads to international work in the same sector. In truth, it is something that is harder to get into when you are young.

Its really not something that holds as much interest for me as it once did. I like my job, my boss, co-workers, the small town I live in, and my quiet boring life. The grander dreams are something I had when I was younger before I met my wife and thought I would be a permanent bachelor. Now I'm just stoked that I get paid to spend about 2 or 3 hours of each work day on sherdog.

Fair enough! It's good to be content with life. And to be paid to be on Sherdog.

Kabul, Smolov Jr Bench Cycle: Week 3, Day 2

Warmup: Yoga- sun salutation B x3
Squat: 95kg x5, x5, x3
Bench: 73kg x5, x5, x5, x5, x5, x5, x5
Bent-Over Rows: 71kg x5, x5, x5

Everything fine today. Bench was a little tiring, but I am taking 2 minute rests these days and after 4-5 sets the fatigue accumulates.

Haven't done conditioning this week- I am much more busy now I have started a new project, while still working on my old one.

Nice work, must be sweet with a squat rack now :)

You certainly lead an interesting life. I always enjoy the anecdotes in here. Primarily I come here for girls, though... errr.. I mean... training. :P

That's really cool that you got a rack! It looks solid. I'm interested to see how smolov junior works out for your bench. Are you running anything for your squat right now? or just trying to increase it linearly?

We run a full service log here- training, pics of hot girls, and anecdotes about interesting and dangerous places!

I will do a few heavy bench singles on Wednesday to see how far past my previous 1RM I can go. Then after that, I'll re-start my LP a little below my sticking point and see if I blow through it. Seems like it's not unusual to put 20lbs on your 1RM bench through Smolov Jr, but I don't believe I'll get that.

The squat rack is awesome. Solid as hell, really nice to unrack and re-rack. I've just being squatting twice a week, once 3x3 and once 3x5, increasing the weight a little bit each week. I didn't want to do more than the minimum, so that my recovery on bench wouldn't be effected. I'm looking forward to going to SS for a little while after, and getting my squat up a bit. Also very tempted to do Smolov Jr for the squat some time soon- even though I might make more progress on LP, I think that Smolov Jr seriously increases your work capacity and helps to ingrain technique. Plus of course, I want to christen my squat rack.

Just to be clear, is this the kind of thing that is not your main reason to come here?

Well, I tell my girlfriend I visit your log to check out your lifting... you just happen to have great pictures as well.

Also, she really appreciates you posting those pictures in my log the other day. She claims I have a sherdog addiction and you're not helping it. I say we burn her! And continue posting!

Women need to accept that we are man. No matter how loyal we are, and no matter how much we love our loved ones, we will always want to look at hot women/pictures of hot women. Until the day of death. Maybe even beyond.

Those images are EXACTLY what I come here NOT to see. I mean. They're almost as bad as this one!

I am glad we agree- no one wants to see this kind of thing. Although just to remind everyone about the guidelines for not posting here, I will have to remind people what shouldn't be posted, and we don't want to see, from time to time. By posting exactly this kind of picture. Quite often, in fact.

Kabul Smolov Jr Bench Cycle: Week Three, Day Three

Warmup c2 rower, 2 minutes
Bench 77kg x4, x4, x4, x4, x4, x4, x4, x4 (8x4@80% week 1RM + 7kg)
Deathlift 140kg x5
Conditioning C2 rower, 5000m (average speed 2:38/500m)

Notes
- No yoga again, dammit!
- Bench was nice. Moderately sure I forgot to note on set, so probably did 9x4 instead of 8x4... I didn't count the one I wasn't totally sure about, just in case.
- Deathlifts went well. Figured out the grip again. Before I was wrapping my thumbs too far around the bar. With no grip problem I was able to concentrate on lifting, and I didn't feel heavy, so I got right through the 5 no problem. 140kg is my max for reps, so that was nice. Definitely increase the weight next time, and probably a few times after that.
- Conditioning was fun. Went a bit faster than normal- usually when I do 5000m I go around 2:45-3:00/500m, this time I was in 2:30-2:45/500m, and accidentally did one sprint when one of my favourite tracks came on. As I speed up a bit, it reminds me that what I really like is intermediate distances at a decent pace, like this time last year when I was running 3km at around 12kmph-13kmph. I know it's not quite a spring and not LSD either, but I like it.

Just one more day of Smolov to go- tomorrow, 10x3@82kg. This will be the toughest one but it should be okay. Then after that, back to my version of SS for a while. Yay!

This thread always delivers in both babes and hard work!

Good row average man!

Kabul Smolov Jr Bench Cycle: Week Three, Final Day!!!

Warmup c2 rower, 3 minutes; dynamic stretching
Squat 90kg x5, 96kg x3, 100kg x1
Bench Day of pain- 82kg x3, x3, x3, x3, x3, x3, x3, x3, x3, x3 (10x3@85% week 1RM + 7kg)
Inverted row x10, x10, x10, x10, x10
Barbell hip thrusts 20kg x10, 40kg x10, 40kg x10

Notes

- Finished Smolov Jr. Woo-hoo! 10*3 at this weight is not that much fun- my triceps picked up a dull ache after about 5 sets, and it got stronger throughout the sets. In retrospect I could have pushed the weight a little harder, adding 1-2kg more, but this was the first time, and the main thing was to finish it. I guess I'l write a review after test my 1RM on Wednesday.
- Rather than 3x3 squats I decided to do 5 at a lighter weight, 3 at 96kg (the target weight for today) and then a slightly heavier single to see where I am at. 100kg was a breeze. Took videos of all of them and I think they were okay, except for the final one of the 3x96kg. I simply lost concentration and cut the depth short a little. I practiced failing a few times, doing the bow of shame onto the safety bars, and it was very easy. This will give me more confidence in the future.
- I can't do GHRs and quite a few other hamstring/glute type work, so today I tried barbell hip thrusts for the first time. The actual motion feels very natural because you do this kind of motion in yoga a lot. With weight on the bar it feels a little uncomfortable resting the bar around your hips, but this should go away in time. The biggest issue seems to be how to get the bar off you when you're done. The plan is that I will be doing these from time to time, and once I start a programme with more space for assistance, they will become my main squat/deadlift assistance along with good mornings.
