Yeah, I like them too. They are fun and you can do some decent weight with them. I am sure that dips really help my pressing, too.

How are you doing your weighted dips? Hanging a dumbbell or weighted vest?

Gotta say I love my weighted vest for these....actually an awesome addition for most 'body weight' exercises.

Right now I am putting them in a backpack. It's a pretty cheap backpack, though, so if the weight goes up too much more then it wil start to be a problem. Back home, by gym has some little buckles that you can use to fasten plates onto a weight belt, and that is also a good approach, but they are probably about 20 years old and the buckles are getting a bit weak.

So I will need to look into a new alternative. Probably just a much better-made backpack.

Hold a dumbbell between your legs. Or make yourself a homemade dip belt. I'm pretty sure someone linked a DIY dipbelt on this forum before.

Nice work man! Squat form looks just fine to me. And you sound like you have a cool job. I visited Thailand a couple years ago and loved it (other than getting jumped by 8 guys!).

Thanks for coming by my log, Chia. Approval of squat form is especially welcome. It has taken me about 7 months to get to this point, and this is the first time I have been happy with it.

My job is cool, you're right. Although it has less cool moments- mainly when guns are fired and bombs go off. And, yes, Thai men do tend to compensate for their smaller size individually by jumping foreigners in very large numbers. But normally you have to do something quite significant to piss them off first.

Did some yoga:

JA stretching series/pre-yoga
3 x Sun Salutation A
Ashtanga standing sequence
Ashtanga primary series up to Marichyasna C

About 45 minutes total. Technique and flexibility were okay.

So... after some time with my Pokemon-themed av and signature, I am now unveiling a new look.

The idea with the Pokemon theme was mainly to poke (no pun intended) a bit of fun about all the 'favourite fighter' signatures that people have. And in general to poke fun at the Heavies, as it is a forum where internetz, and MMA, is serious business. These days the need to poke fun at the heavies is much less.

And so... the name 'Jaunty Angle' was originally intended as reference to phrases like 'he wore his top hat at a jaunty angle'. And when I came up with it, I definitely had in mind the age of chaps and gentlemanly behaviour. So now I have given myself an av and signature that goes with original idea.

Hope that the many, many Pokemon fans of S&C are not too disappointed!

I have to be honest. Everytime I read the word jaunty, it makes me think of the Stephen King short story from Skeleton Crew "The Jaunt".

I like your new look, although I believe the change is more likely to be associated with the aftermath of your supreme disappointment with the weakness of Ash and Pikachu in this new Black/White series.

Either way, change is good.

It's actually Midmo's disappointment, but I am happy for my change to be interpreted as solidarity with Midmo on this one.

I've only actually read one Stephen King book- I picked up 'Under the Dome' back in January on my last trip out to Southern Sudan. I am glad I did- it made a pretty long journey very bearable.

I just started the Dark Tower series. Stephen King is really just a phenomenal writer. He could write about taking a dump and it would keep my attention. And I'm not even a reader.

Skeleton Crew is a book of short stories that are ALL worth reading.

I'll definitely pick up more of his books. My current favourite non-serious books are a fantasy series by a buy called Joe Abercrombie. There five so far, a trilogy (called 'the first law' trilogy) and two follow-up books that are sort of standalone. I am not always wild about fantasy, but this guy is one of the best writers of any genre I have ever come across, has brilliant characters and tells a perfect story. If you're looking for a recommendation, I can't recommend better.

Kabul: Week 6, Workout 2

Note- I had a very light lunch (a small tuna salad) and no mid-afternoon snack today. Might have been reflected in my lack of stamina today. Or it could have been one of those days.

Warmup

JA Stretching Series
Sun Salutation A x5, x3, x2'

Squats

Work Sets: 93kg x5, x5, x5

Very tired by these. Felt like a lot of work. The depth of the first two sets was good, the last was only parallel. I decided not to do any backoffs or extra volume.

Bench

Work Sets: 83kg x5, x5, x3
Backoff: 60kg x10, x10, x10

83kg was actually harder than last time at the same weight! First set was hard, second set I did by being pissed off, but it was a little ragged. Cut it short after 3, and did some narrow grip at a lighter weight. As before, the sticking point no longer seems to be getting it off my chest. It is half way up.

I am wondering if I am getting a little tired of 3 sets of 5 across with linear progression. I could drop the weight down a couple of kilos, do ramped sets for a little while, maybe some heavy triples or something.

Deathlift

Given how heavy everything was, I didn't fancy a set of five, so I thought I would try some heavy singles and try to set a PR. My previous max was 140kg (plus some light collars). I went

60kg x3
90kg x2
110kg x1
130kg x1
140kg x1
145kg x1 (+5kg PR!)
150kg x1 (+10 kg PR!)

150kg was hard to get off the ground, but no problems with grip or lockout. I might have had another 5kg in me, but I pulled off a blister right next to a callus, and I was worried that with the callus so exposed I might rip it off.

I also made a video. Coming in a separate post.

* * *

With how heavy the squats and bench was, and the deathlift PR, I decided not to do any more work. Felt great after the DLs though. Not fried at all- actually quite energetic. And my back felt good somehow- relaxed and straight.

I may have gone a little bit overboard with this PR video :icon_chee

Putting aside issues of production quality... I don't think I lost my back straightness during these. I was wobbling from side to side during 150kg a bit, though, which I have never done before. But then again I have never lifted something that weighed 150kg before.

BTW, JauntyPoints for the first person to spot the cultural reference.

Can't see the video, thus am ineligible for JauntyPoints, but congrats on the deathlift PR!!

Thanks!

You probably just couldn't see the video because I was messing around with the settings. I encourage you to give it another go- the opportunity for JauntyPoints doesn't come every day! :D

My work blocks video. Maybe I'll put a ticket into IT considering JauntyPoints are at stake. I think they'll understand.
