Strength in Interesting Places

Nice squats and deathlifts. How are you liking the triples on the squat?

Also, this log is amazing. Just amazing. And you are more flexible than I am. Maybe I should arrange a yoga class with some of those yoga models you were talking about... I think that would loosen me up.

Thanks!

I usually do 3x5, but the triples today where very good. It allowed me to some squats quickly without getting tired, see how I did, realize what I wanted to do, try again, see how I did... over and over. So it was like an accelerated learning process.

Good luck finding that yoga class!

Edit, for top of page. My God, Eliza Dushku really does scrub up well:

Had to quote this. Sorry.

Btw, why are you moving at 2kg on the fatalitylifts?

Be my guest!

Several reasons I'm doing 2kg on the certaindeathlifts. One is because the smallest plates I have here in Kabul are 2.5kg, and the ankleweights only allow me to load in increments of whole kilos. So my options are incremements of 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5. Before, I was adding 5kg per time all the way up to 135kg, then went to 2.5kg. 2.5kg seemed about right, but that isn't an option. So I am rounding down to 2kg.

Another is that I am really enjoying micro-loading. I get to add weight every time and it gets heavier, but I don't notice it too much. In fact, with one exercise, power clean, it has actually been feeling lighter recently, not heavier!

I do seem to have the capacity to add more weight to my DL than I can with my presses, but I am a bit nervous because of the injury I gave myself when I did 5x140. I had the weight too far in front of me, and somehow the inter-abdominal pressure I was generating did something to something underneath my ribs, on both sides. Some kind of sprain or bruising. Hurt when they were under pressure, either from touching, lying in bed wrong or doing heavy squats, DLs or power cleans. Took a little more than a month to go away completely. So going slow and steady makes me feel like I am strengthening something that wasn't very strong there.

In the end, I should still adding 6kg every two weeks, and I guess 13kg per month. I think that would be decent progress.

Good idea, 13kg per month is altot. Think about it this way 13 kg per month will be 152 kg in a year :)

So that means I will be DL'ing 288kg this time next year. And since I add 1kg per time to my bench, I guess that is about 75kg per year, so I will be benching 160kg by then. :)

Kabul: Week 5, Workout 2

I am going to go back to not logging my warmups. You all get the general idea. 2x5 on empty bar, 2x3 at 40%, 2x2 at 60%, 2x1 at 80% or thereabouts. Except press I only do one set of each.

Warmup

Yoga- 5x Sun Salutation A, Asthtanga Standing Sequence (shortened version), Marichyasana A and C.

Squat

90kg: x5, x5, x5, x5

I was a little sore right where I imagine my hip sockets are, and a little in my knees, so I didn't up the weight. But I filmed each set (except the third, where I had a camera error), and they were all more or less as I wanted them.

The extra depth I get from using filming to stop myself from cheating is going to help me a lot.

Press

54kg: x5, x5, x5
61kg: x1
63kg: x1
65kg: x1 (+5kg PR on 1RM)

I actually did the singles after my power cleans. I wanted to try liftoffs with a heavier weight, and was very surprised that I could actually get them all the way up- that is a +5kg PR since early Jan, when I was about 5kg heavier. (When I did this I briefly thought I'd liften 75kg... more on this below.)

Power Clean

55kg: x2
60kg: x1
61kg: x3, x3, x3, x3, x3
71kg: x3

I messed up the weights and accidentally did a load at 61kg... when I tried to press it (and succeded) at the end of my last set I briefly thought I'd managed 71kg, not 61kg. I tried a few heavier weights, not really believing what was happening, then I figured it out. So I put the bar up to 71kg and one set at that weight.

This means I need to re-do 71kg next Monday, but at least I got the new PR on the press.

Bonus Exercise

Weighted chin, +13kg: x5,x5,x4

Also did some ab work.

* * * *

Really pleased about the press PR. If my press has gone up 5kg, my bench has probably gone up by more, so my 1RM on bench could well be over 91kg (200lbs). I might ask one of the beefy security guys to come in on Friday and spot me so I can test it. Benching 200lbs is a big goal of mine. Yes, it is easy for many if not all of my fellow loggers, but there it is.

Just an FYI for anyone who doesn't know, but....

The girl in the picture at the top of the page (Ashlynn Brooke) does some great NSFW videos.

That is all.

Well done on the press PR!

Thanks! I am pretty stoked. I thought before that I was at last starting to making stready progress on my press, and now I am almost certain.

On the top of the previous page? That's Eliza Dushku (from Doll's House, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, etc). She did take her top off in a movie early in her career, but that is about the extent of her foray into that type of thing.

Nah. Top of this page. I have it set to 30 posts per page.

I decided not to do it as my internet connection isn't super-fast and it would make opening pic-heavy pages even slower. Plus then my top of pages won't be most other people's.

I'd guess that most posters are set at 30 posts per page, and that the split explains the odd placement of some "top of the page" posts in my view (and presumably yours as well). Of course, the only real effect that has is that eye candy will pop up a little more often and in somewhat unexpected places, which can't really be considered a drawback.

Nice work on the press PR. It's by far and away my most stubborn lift, and I regard anyone's progress on it as worthy of minor celebration. :)

Random Exercise Day

I was thinking about doing something intense, like sprints or some type of burpee challenge, but in the end I thought I would take it easy and give myself some good recovery for tomorrow. So I did

JA stretching protocol: 20 mins- about enough for 4 cycles on each leg
C2 rower: 5000m, 26:15 pace between 2:30-2:40 for 500m most of the time (resistance 6)
Barbell curls and GM supersets: 30kg- x10, x10, x10

The only other time I have ever done GMs was part of freestyle barbell complexes. With 30kg I couldn't really feel if there was any weight on there, but that is not a bad thing for the first time you do an exercise.

I plan to do the April conditioning challenge on either Saturday or Sunday, and then have a complete rest on the other day.

I'm hoping that it will be minor celebration a-go-go here starting soon. 55kg is my 5RM but I've never done three sets across, and I feel pretty confident that that comes on Monday. Thereafter, I will potentially be in new 5RM territory every press day- at least for a while.
