Television Stranger Things 4 (New Trailer)

Robin looks so old in the new clips I've seen. Her character is supposed to be 19 right now.

They really need to stop casting 20+ something actors to play teenagers. It was weird in the 1990s and it's still weird today. It might work for a one off film, but not a tv show or film series where you have many future seasons/films planned.

Everyone in this show looks old as hell. Jonathan looking more and more like Edward Furlong now each season lol If it takes almost 10 years to end a show (not convinced that is happening now btw) this what it looks like.

The memes are totally worth it tho

There was a post earlier in this thread, but if you actually look at senior yearbook photos from the 80's, its fucking insane how old they look. They practically ALL look older than the cast.

It's interesting for sure.

I think a portion of it has to do with kids perspective and how parents raised children. Back then, kids wanted to grow up as fast as possible, to be able to do all the things that came with the freedom of adulthood. Fake IDs were prominent, kids dressed and styled to look older. Being older got more respect and doors opened. Being a kid was fun, but the goal was to get to 18.

Kids don't think like this at all anymore. At all. In fact, the complete opposite exists. Kids living at home into their late 20's/early 30's, people dressing with less tact and wearing all manner of juvenile clothing now, shying from responsibility, generally everything happening later in life, holding on to childhood longer, etc.

A complete cultural shift in the span of 40 years, which can be seen quite clearly! Crazy how fast things change now.

The biggest problem by far with S5 is the casting of Holly. It was a major misstep, and not one they've made before really throughout the rest of the show. And not only is she an absolutely terrible actress, but dear god so much screen time is given to her plotline. It sucks all the air out of the show any time she is on screen. There are other issues with clunky writing, etc, but the Holly problem is insurmountable. I've rewatched a bunch of it already and I just skip the scenes with her, last episode in particular. And there is some really good stuff in this season, too. Delightful Derek is the MVP by a mile, maybe my favorite character in the whole series. The Game of Thrones comparisons were, I expect, already locked and loaded from people waiting to be obnoxious.
I like Holly. I found that story interesting. Gives good insight into how Henry/Vecna manipulated the kids. My biggest issue is how they made the main cast invincible. Turning little Nancy into Rambo against the military was so dumb. Mrs Wheeler fighting with a wine bottle and kicking ass meanwhile in every other scene the demogorgons take an incredible amount of damage and are super fast. It was all too unbelievable

They definitely nailed that 80’s a pack a day smoker vibe down. Young adults today smoke and drink way less than before. Unfortunately they put all those damn chemicals on their faces along with lip fillers and shit which make them look older. Millie Bobby Brown looks like she’s in her 30’s.

I'm seeing some comparisons online to Game of Thrones. Like are we fucking serious now? Does anyone remember how absolutely amazing that show was and how fucking terrible the last two seasons were. Game of Thrones had higher highs but my god the lows were way worse. Even though Season 5 isn't quite as strong as I had hoped it's not nearly as bad as the last season of Game of Thrones. I'm still enjoying it for what it is. Hopefully last episode delivers. I'm not expecting anyone to die at this point though, they are playing it a bit too safe so that's my biggest criticism.

+1

Game of Thrones had much higher highs and lower lows. I guess you could say the wavelength between amazing crests and WTF troughs in GOT is comparable to wavelength between wow cool! highs and meh lows in ST. But GOT had a much greater wave amplitude and the midpoint of GOT was significantly higher than ST at least up to GOT S7, which drastically lowered the bar.

Agree S5 is a bit of a drop off from earlier seasons but it's still enjoyable. I would compare it to The Force Awakens. They're throwing out a few new bones but mostly playing it safe with recycled shit without really rocking the boat. Finale could come in clutch like Revenge of the Sith and elevate the season and the overall series. But as long as it isn't a steaming pile of shit like Rise of Skywalker, I will consider this series an overall win.

On top of this, another reason those kids look old AF is because these are yearbook pics. Those kids would look very different rolling into class or cruising on their bikes on the daily. Yearbook pics were the one day of the year you did yourself up and tried to look "grown up" by putting on your dad's suit or your mom's necklace and earrings or some shit because as you say, back then being grown up was glamourized over being a kid.

I agree with you regarding Nancy. But all Mrs Wheeler managed to do was cause a few cuts and grazes to the Demo before it bitch-slapped her into a coma. She didn't come close to kicking it's ass.

The writing of this show fell off a cliff. It's like they forgot how to do exposition. It's both hamfisted but also weirdly vague at points, which makes you wonder what the hell you even just watched.

It reminds me how I used to write book reports as a kid. Just drawning out sentences to fill up the page lol I wouldn’t be surprised if they had some AI assistance as well.

I assume Henry/Vecna made sure the demos didn't kill Holly's parents. That would be harder to turn her to his side. And that way he can threaten them later like he did to Derek for going in the woods.

Something interesting to me, especially as the scripts have more nuance - dealing with Will's theme, is the disparity in acting quality.

I hadn't seen Winona since Aliens (3 was it?) and loved her in the 80s/90s, but her presence is amateurish at best.
Several of the characters have clear skill, the others hold up just enough but the weak acting stands out poorly.

Schnapp, who plays Will, was always good, I think, but it seems to me like he stepped up his game even more so this season.

I also appreciate when some of the really good actors add nuance and emotion to what could have been throwaway moment. Like in that most recent episode

when Max calls Will over after he speaks with the group because she can’t stand up to hug him. Really nicely acted moment between the two of them that seemed authentic. And I was thinking about it- I’d have to rewatch the earlier seasons but I don’t really recall Will and Max having much to do with one another but Sink and Schnapp were good enough there to make it seem like the characters were extremely tight.

Ryder was really good at other times on the show. I just think this season hasn’t given her character that much to work with.

The writing quality and action quality tanked in the second half of this last season.

Really worried the finale is gonna suck ass.

TIL the Robin actress is Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman's daughter.

But damn she looks just as old as her mom in the Will coming out scene.

Maya Hawke reminds me of a young Jeff Goldblum in her fast, jerky movement, lively facial expressions, gestures and so on. Very animated and fizzy.
