You could argue I spose he was never really much inline with other film movements of the era and although he made films in genres that were somewhat "in fashion" at the time they were often quite different to what you typically saw and often a comment on it.
i saw the strangelove film one time, didn't really like or even get it. What really surprised me about that one was that Elvis liked it, a guy who I'd think had simple, no bs tastes like mine but he loved that one and we all know he later used the thus spake theme from 2001 to open his show. Poor Elvis had to play the rock and roll neanderthal but I've read stories that made me think that there was a lot of hidden artsy fartsiness in him.
