It seems clear that news orgs/lawmakers should rely on these stats from the DOJ's official statisticians and now I'm wondering what is the story behind when/why the FBI estimates became all anyone talks about.

The crime data is one of many things they have lied about. There is no inflation to saying inflation is transitory. They lied about adding more than 800 hundred thousand jobs to the market now they are lying about violent crime being down. How can anyone believe them saying the economy is good when they get caught lying about everything else.

Crime is, and always has been, a top 5 issue in almost every American election. Lying and skewing data for political purposes on this very real topic is disgusting and should be called out and if able, prosecuted from any side it comes from.
