STARFIELD discussion

Yes and no. I think an expansive DLC for Starfield that offers up another 30 hours of content that is actually really engaging, could do a lot to at least bring people back to try it out again. The base game is what it is, though, although I'd argue that they still made a decent amount of QOL improvements that made it far better than it initially was. Nothing like Cyberpunk, though, which was an excellent game buried under an ungodly amount of bugs and glitches.

That said, they'll have to do wonders to even convince people that this DLC is worth a fuck, after "Shattered Space". That was supposed to be a big deal too, and it ended up being some cheap throwaway content you could beat in a few hours that they charged a premium for.
Honestly I just think the company isn’t what they used to be and has essentially been lapped by other devs at this point.

I did think that Starfield was a miss in their worlds.

I also think that a new Elder Scrolls and a new Fallout could still be met with critical acclaim. Bethesda have been excellent at making one big world with lots of interesting things in it.

The issue with Starfield, at least to me, is that the cities just weren't that engaging and the worlds were barren. The scope was too small in some areas and too big in others.

My hype for a new Fallout and Elder Scrolls has honestly fallen off a cliff. I'm just not confident they can deliver on either of those IPs anymore. I hope I'm wrong especially when it comes to Fallout but at this rate it wont be until 2035 till we see a new Fallout game.

Not lapped by too many, TBH. Their formula is still very good, and very few games have really topped their best efforts. I think "Starfield" was a bit of a miss for them, but mostly because of the dull writing and characters. If that was tightened up and it was a truly engaging experience from beginning to end, like their other games, I don't think it's other issues(loading screens for instance) would've been all that big of a deal. I think part of the reason for it's inconsistencies in the core loop of the game, comes down to being a new IP they weren't as comfortable with. It's not easy creating a new universe. Sometimes you hit, sometimes you miss, and sometimes it's somewhere in between, and that's where I'd put Starfield. There's good stuff in there, but the connective tissue of it all was a bit frayed.

I still trust them to deliver on Fallout and ES, until they prove otherwise.

Have you played Tainted Grail? A podcaster I listen to who loves their games said it’s a better version of what they do. I haven’t time to play it with all these games out but I plan on trying it soon.

Either way I hope you’re right. I’m not a huge ES fan but I love fallout.

It's pretty awesome, at least the first two acts (3 parts). It's the closest we've gotten to a Bethesda proper game in a while. It's crazy how many quests you can stumble into just by exploring.

The combat is very Dark Souls-ish, where you have to manage stamina, distance and weight. Once you upgrade your dashes/stamina, zipping around the battlefield is so much fun.

It has a pretty good magic system from what I've heard, but I was mainly melee/two handed sword. The bonk sound/effect from the two handed swords is very gratifying.

It's a bit janky, and you can always feel the lower budget, but the art style is gorgeous at times, (love dark fantasy) exploration is rewarding (some big ass dungeons), and the story is intriguing. There's some solid writing/characters too.

They released a big DLC last month, and a big update. I never finished act 3, as I heard the patch they released was supposed to improve it. I'll get back to it at some point.

It's definitely worth your time and money.

Nice yea pretty much everyone I’ve seen who tried it enjoyed it. I’ll definitely be picking it up eventually.

i'm gonna grab it but i'm already pretty backlogged.

I was thinking about Tainted Grail, but I missed the sale and I was a bit concerned about performance on the Series S. Maybe I'll grab it on the next sale.

No I disagree.

I had no issues with the writing and the characters. Could it have been better? Yes of course but it was good enough to keep me entertained. The main problem for me was how the world was built. The planet travelling (slow and boring), planet exploring (extremely boring) and the loading (unbearably almost everywhere). The problem was any side quests or straying from the main quests would be expectedly boring. You had to trek for minutes (felt that long) for a small interaction/area with a terrible payoff. With Skyrim it was fun to stray off the beaten path and explore. It wasn't the case for this game. That was my main problem. The constant loading in and out of areas just gradually broke my patience.

Granted I haven't played it since launch so it could have improved a shit ton but at the time I believed there was fundamental problems with this game. I no longer have gamepass so it isn't very likely I will ever try it again.

Additional edit: I will say that ES should be a back to form for Bethesda.

Those issues are valid, but your last point is a writing issue as well. If those side missions were actually interesting, you'd put up with the technical bullshit a lot more. They seemed to also want to have some "base building" thing that was completely pointless, but also created a system of mission design where some of them were specifically just for resource gathering on baron planets, for you pointless space station material gathering base that you don't need at all. I think having that "mode" take up so much real estate in the game, was one of it's biggest flaws, since it's entirely pointless and not even fun to mess around with, like it was in Fallout 4.

Well, they did make a few key adjustments for traversal that definitely improved the flow of the game. When I first played it at launch, you would get lost in every city, because they had no labels or fast travel options outside the monorails, and it's waypoint system was retarded.
