I just rewatched Maul vs Obi Wan and qui Gon wow what an amazing jedi fight.. that by itself is probably better than the whole The Last Jedi.
How's this film doing box office wise vs expectations?
I tried to watch it again on last Friday night but it wasn't playing anymore. Saw jumanji instead.
Wasn't playing anymore? The fuck? There are still nine 2D screenings daily at my local theater + a few 3D screenings.
Are you SURE it wasn't showing?
As for box office, I'm not sure what exactly the expectations were, but it's been the #1 movie every weekend it's been in theaters so far and it also had the second-highest debut in history.
It's also made it past the $1 billion mark worldwide and if it can make it to $1.25 billion--which I'm pretty sure it will--then it will be the highest-grossing film of the year.
Thor is still playing at one of the theaters near me
See for yourself. 7 screens, none showing star wars.Wasn't playing anymore? The fuck? There are still nine 2D screenings daily at my local theater + a few 3D screenings.

The schedule is renewed every Thursday so today's schedule is the same as last weekend.
Maybe it's because there's a popular local movie showing now but still...Ferdinand, pitch perfect and "the greatest showman" with Hugh Jackman are showing

Would have really liked to see Luke turn evil
One of the auditoriums has double beds for seats though so it's not that badWhat a shit theater. Let's be real here, regardless of people's thoughts, the movie is pumping stupid amounts of money.

Rey actually turning to join Kylo(although with neither so clearly evil) would have been by far the most interesting ending for me, indeed that seemed like everything the film had been working towards only to rejected it and tact on a feelgood ending instead.
Now that would have been a seriously interesting piece of deconstruction of modern cinema with its propensity to write simplistic "kickass" female heroes.
The problem with Ray turning evil, as far as I see it, would be that there would then be no one left who are instructed in the ways of the Jedi on the good side.
Do we really want that? How would that even work narratively? It seems like it would be a mess and that we'd essentially be left with a series where everyone with charisma is on the Dark Side and we're left with a very bland Rebellion that is difficult to conjure up much enthusiasm for.
The obvious answer would be make that the climax and don't kill off Luke in this film and give him a role in potentially training others and turning one/both of them back.
That to be is bvastly more interesting than what we got which is Luke gone, Rey as an even more straightforward hero and Kylo as an even more straight forward but petulant villain. I mean I wasn't greatly interested in Abrams mysterys as I kind of suspected they went nowhere but this film to me passes down very little of interest to the next one.
Empire on the other hand passed down the reveal of Vader beign Luke's father, Han being captured and indeed a general climate that wasn't so obviously good/evil,
I could see it. Though while it might be an interesting twist, I dunno, I like Rey and I want to believe in her. I want to have faith in her goodness.
Also, regarding Kylo, I think it's at least possible that the next movie might surprise us. There was something about the look on his face when he and Rey were looking at each other and the ship door closed. I'm not sure that his inner conflict is settled.
To me though there doesn't seem to be much to Rey beyond "goodness" which doesn't make for a very interesting character.

Empire on the other hand passed down the reveal of Vader beign Luke's father which cast the whole situation as much more morally complex and Luke's character potentially having to opprate at a higher level of wisdom to succeed.
I would have loved that. I enjoyed the movie just fine the way it was but seeing her go dark would have been great. Although there would need to be a little more buildup to her making that kind of turn. Perhaps her saying something like "I know I can get through to you" and choosing to stick with Kylo and slowly losing her morals to all the temptations of power and greed during another movie. I can't see her killing off the remains of the rebellion though. That would be too far too quick. The purpose of this movie was to remove Mark Hamill from the story IMO. Disney didn't want him around. This was a "cleaning house" kind of situation...
I remember reading that disney had all these demands if you showed Star wars. They got a bigger cut, it had it be in your biggest screen had to be showed the most etc. Maybe some theaters just opted not to deal with thatThat's weird. I would call them.
It doesn't make any sense to me that they would bump Star Wars before The Greatest Showman.
