I thought it was a pretty bad movie, lots of stuff that just felt bland and pointless. Also really didn't like all the weird/cringy attempts at comedy, they felt really out of place. Just feel like the storyline hardly even moved forward at all and the whole movie was just a waste.

congratulations, you have a brain.

Luke is dead. Poe is now the de facto leader of the Resistance. Rey is officially recognized as a Jedi and the one to carry on the Jedi teachings and tradition. Kylo Ren has swept away all rivals and established himself as the supreme leader of the First Order.

That seems like a lot of development in a single film.

Rey, Kylo and Finn to be if anything end the film less interesting than they started it. She's has force powers and is now even more obviously good, he's more obviously bad and Finn is still Finn. Compared to Empire Strikes Back for example where Luke ends the film as a much more interesting character than he started it.

The Last Jedi has a lower rotten tomato audience score than The Phantom Menance..... that’s just sad when Audience likes Jar Jar Binks more than you. I actually prefer him over Rose. At least he had a cool maybe he’s a sithlord story going for him.

Is it because they accepted TPM as a children's film?

On second viewing, with expectations of mind blowing twists gone, I saw the movie more like you did. It was fairly entertaining. After 40 years of star wars, older fans wanted more mature depth, and they (I) wanted some completely next level stuff.. That did not happen. But on rewatch, the beings in the casino were somewhat interesting.. Even though the part was ultimately pointless.

Things that annoyed me the first time while I waited impatiently to have my mind blown, did not annoy me the second time. The FIRST time, they were amplified by the end result of not really having my mind blown. Lose that (unfortunately) unrealistic expectation of being floored by a reveal, and you start to see what the critics saw. The comparisons to Empire and 94% score were the enemies of this film.
See I have a problem with the whole well the movie sucked but I’ll watch it a second time knowing it sucks so I know I won’t be disappointed and now I can enjoy the sucky movie. Rose and Finn story is still horrible. Leia going Superman is still horrible. Luke, Poe, Finn, Rey characters were all ruined. The super slow chase through space was awful. How does watching it a second time erase all that? This movie didn’t have to be another Empire but it has a lower audience score than THE PHANTOM MENANCE and for good reason.

I saw it twice it was worse the second time.

It was more entertaining than menace. People were more frustrated because it was much closer to being a good movie, with stupidness ruining that.

It was better for me with lowered expectations.

Well that's kind of unrelated to your original statement, though. Here's what you said:

I would agree that parts of TLJ do feel like they have the weight to measure up to the original films but that these elements don't get enough focus or commited to fully and ultimately it doesn't actually move the plot forward much, at least in terms of the positions of its lead characters.

You were speaking about moving the plot forward, not whether or not the characters' internal lives are more interesting to you.

The thing is, the events in TLJ do set the stage for new plot developments.

Consider the fact that Rey is now recognized as a Jedi, who is also in possession of the Jedi texts. Well that means she could now potentially establish a new Jedi order which has HUGE plot ramifications. Because of that series of events in TLJ, things can now happen in Ep IX that could not happen before.

Or consider that Kylo has killed Snoke and is now in full control of the First Order. Again, that means a lot in terms of where the story goes from here. No longer is he some young apprentice under another's control; he is now the Supreme Leader.

I'll agree with Finn though. Finn is just Finn. I think he's more of a . . . I dunno, sidekick character doesn't seem like the right description, but he's not a leader like Rey and Poe are.

See that’s what I’m saying. That time could be used to watch a better made movie like Shape of Water.

Yeah probably. But I barely pay anything for movies these days. Friend works at the theater I frequent.

I had to take the kids.. But you are correct.
I guess taking the kids and watching it as a pretty to look at with some laughs and not taking it seriously as a legit good film can make it more tolerable.. I do that with the shit transformers movies. Makes them tolerable. But I love Star Wars story too much to just accept the last jedi the way it is.

I wasn’t talking about the money, just the time. But because I barely pay anything either. I use movie pass 10 bucks a month.

Lol actually back in the day I had a friend like that. The last day we saw movies there together for free before we walked into the movie his boss asked him to come into the office. When he came back out my friend said “well I have some good news and bad news. The bad news is I just got fired. The good news is we can watch 1 more free movie” lol
