A week later and still a good to meh feeling about it. Main gripe is still not getting a chance to see how bad ass Jedi Master Luke really was. Just one scene of him besmirching some fools or whipping on Kylo without breaking a sweat or something. Anything more than just the galactic FaceTime encounter.

Throughout the trilogy we're supposed to believe Anakin is a good friend of Obi-Wan based on a single line of dialogue in ANH.

But there's really nothing there in the prequels to support that, with Anakin basically a non character in ep 1, and in the following two films is a pretentious, insecure asshole.
It's just not there, the emotional connection we're supposed to make with him. Without that, I end up watching the events unfold from a distance, separated from the characters I'm meant to care about and I become detached.

I think their closeness is inferred by the fact that obi wan was with him for all those years as his teacher. How would they not be close? They were always side by side.

It isnt that bad as noted in the other reply. Its not good but its still got STAR WARS on it. For now, it will sell no matter what.

If its doing worse than TFA then you have some data to weigh. The next one is where youll see a weaker premiere, bar none.

I wouldn't go as far as bar none. I'm leaning in favour of a lower premier but there are a lot of reasons for that beyond the previous movie being critically reviewed by what is still less than the majority of fans. It will be the 9th film in the series and fans are getting older just to name a few.

Saw it a couple of nights ago. Thought it was entertaining at the very least. I wished I spent the $50 it cost to see the movie on something else. One of the view times the Mrs liked a action/sci-fi movie more then me.

Not in the picture (but is in the nerdist link above) is the first half of season 6 before Disney bought and shitcanned the the second half of Clone Wars on the Cartoon Network. Specifically Episodes 1-4 where a clone trooper discovers the secrets of Order 66 and episodes 10-13 where Yoda travels to Moribund the Sith home planet.

Maybe I'll do that.

I can't believe there are so many seasons, and so many episodes in each season.

I get it. And ROTS is the exact movie where Lucas threw in the towel and I don't blame him. It's the movie that made him realize there is no pleasing hardcore fans. He gave us everything we said we wanted after eviscerating him for the previous two, and we still weren't happy.

Outside the show, the franchise forgot what it is, in trying to be so many things for so many different people. But there will be plenty more chances now that there will be one every fucking year now.

He gave us everything we wanted but included steaming bags of poop.

It doesn't matter how delicious the ice cream was, once you add poop, it's all over.

But in movies, you SHOW characters developing relationships through shared actions, not just expository dialogue that informs. We hear about their friendship moments but don't see them, they're just suddenly good friends when the only established relationship is that of a kid who barely understands what's happening and a reluctant teacher.

One of the things I don’t like is at times it adds even more unnecessary plot holes.

You know, I watched a documentary last night called The Prequels Strike Back: A Fan's Journey, in which a guy went around talking to various film professionals and Star Wars fans about the prequels.

One of the things that was pointed out in the doc was the way that Jar Jar's antics (such as his slapstick unintentional killing of battle droids in the Battle of Naboo) are a nod to Buster Keaton films.

Here are a couple of examples:








It seems pretty obvious to me that Lucas is being sincere in that quote. For better or worse, he really was pulling a lot from early cinema when he made the prequels and nodding to early adventure films along the way.

There's also a lot of discussion about how Lucas borrowed from Shakespeare's work and Greek tragedies, which once you think about it that way, it's pretty obvious.

It's not inconsistent at all.

Anakin saying the Jedi are evil tells the story. He's trying to put an end to what he believes has become a corrupt--even evil--organization.

This is why killing the kids may seem harsh, but when you view it through the lens of Anakin attempting to put an end to the Jedi once and for all, it makes sense. After all, the younglings, for as innocent as they may be, have received Jedi training.

I know he was paying homage to those serials in ANH especially.

In the prequels he was just rehashing ideas. And no, I don't accept that his lazy direction was intentional, he just writes shitty, shitty dialogue. His actors are saddled with garbage to wrap their mouths around.

Saw it again yesterday and it was actually a lot better the 2nd time around. I'm probably the biggest and most knowledgeable Star Wars fan on here and I have to admit that I went into the first viewing with my mind already made up that it would be a disappointment, so of course I didn't give it a fair shake. My mistake but I'm glad I gave it a second chance

For those who hated it I recommend you check your egos at the door and go see it again. Rian Johnson is a legit genius but it takes an open (and evolved) mind to be able to appreciate what he's done

Well, that's true, I suppose that does feel a bit inconsistent.

I really don't think you should fall into the trap of thinking Anakin just killed the younglings because he suddenly was an "evil man," though. It was him carrying out his part of Order 66, to get rid of the Jedi for good. If he was reluctant to kill Obi-Wan, then it makes sense considering how close they were.
