Honestly I think people were so geared up to love TFA as an expression of there negative view of the prequels they gave it vastly too much leeway.

TFA holds your hand the entire time, pleasantly yanking you along a Willy Wonka journey. Lots of candy, more midgets than necessary.

It probably doesn't help either that we've now had Rogue One released that actually tried to recreate the style of the originals not be a shallow action/nostalgia diversion. Abrams I think had the same problem with Trek Into Darkness as bringing back Khan ment people actually compared the film to Trek II and judged it for the shallow confused mess it was.

Please. Please do not get me started on INTO DARKNESS.

I liked R1 too.

There is actually some interesting work in The Last Jedi by comparison(the Kylo scenes) but its mixed in with so much that's questionable with a lot of that being down to Abrams legacy.

Why would anyone want to pile on what is clearly a supremely difficult struggle you must be already having with life.

What's with everyone's hard on for looper anyway? Did not enjoy it that much. Very interesting concept, made kinda boring and cheesy.

I'd have to say there were cool effects of time-travel, notably the amputation scene. The other convention it does better than most was handling the little kid character. Then there is Emily Blunt. It is so far as close to a live-action AKIRA as I've seen. I liked the narration here more than BRICK. It's easier to sell the rules of time travel than it is to sell a special kind of mood piece. Even when you throw in another big concept like telekinesis. I just happen to love movies about time travel and telekinesis. They usually result in pretty neat spectacles.

I also really like Garrett Dillahunt in it.

I’m a big fan of the Eric Bana Star Trek movie.

I love Eric bana actually. I believe he’s a severely underrated actor.

I’m legit dying for Denis Villeneuve to direct a Star Wars movie.

He’s the next big thing imo. His movies have all been really fucking good and blade runner 2049 is a masterpiece in film making.

The scene with the Bees is so amazing.

I think they asked him to do a movie but he had another project lined up.


I’d also love to see the director of the Revenant make a Star Wars film.

The interesting thing for me though is that really I don't think that film is all that much different to Abrams first Trek film, perhaps not quite as good but the bigger problem again is that I think expectations were rising and by including Khan he put himself up against something with a vastly more serious tone and more depth to it in Wrath of Khan.

There was a lot of talk from certain reviewers of Rogue One being dull last year but again I felt a lot of that was being defensive of TFA. The likes of Chris Stuckman had been telling us how Abrams had perfectly recreated the Star Wars formula for the modern age and then along comes a film that actually goes along way to doing that which makes TFA look like a shallow diversion so it must be attacked.

The whole idea that the prequels failed because they were too serious is nonsense to me, rather they failed because there central drama wasn't sold well(due to bad plottin, scripting, acting, etc), nore indeed was a lot of comedy that was included in them. Its actually pretty ironic that the sequels are sposed to the the "anti prequels" yet a lot of the humour and cartoonish aliens in them feel much more prequelish than they do inline with the originals.

What do you find questionable?

A great deal of things, to avoid a massive post I would list...

The general tone being too light/cartoonish.

Luke's character being too lacking in purpose/wisdom.

Irrelevant plotting around Poe and FInn that goes on for far too long.

Drawn out ending that backs off from the films most interesting idea.

What I liked was the Kylo material, that to me did show you part of why people were positive about Johnson directing a SW film. Very well acted from Driver and far more original and ambitious than anything in Abram's film, that and a more serious take on Luke should have been at the centre of this film with the Snoke scene at the climax and Rey joining Kylo rather than reverting to there previous roles and throwing it a reworked Hoth battle at the end to spend viewers home happy.

Ive spoken to a lot of people about this movie and it seems like most people agree that Kylo Ren has been the standout in this new trilogy.


I have to admit I like Rey a lot. I like Ridley for whatever reason. She appeals to me on the screen.

An issue with her lack of background to me was that Abrams never really built this up as something the character cared about, he didn't really invest much time in that story at all but there was nothing really to suggest Rey believed herself to be "special".

I'd agree though that this plot almost made that work, at that moment I was really thinking "I can tolerate all the silly irrelevant stuff and Luke's character assassination for this" only for the film to back off of it and then resort to throwing action and nostalgia at my face at light speed Abrams style hoping I wouldn't notice. Have that as the climax and I think people would be looking forward to the 3rd film a hell of a lot more, as it is whats really changed? Luke's now a force ghost, Kylo's now in charge and the resistance is smaller? not exactly that inspiring for a sequel is it?

Upon second viewing this movie is extremely meh. Definitely not what I wanted to see from the big return of Luke Skywalker. The EU got it right. Disney has not even come close.

So far I've seen a lot of complaints that want more of the old stuff. Given the franchise is trying to turn a new leaf, and now that the element of surprise and the disappointment of expectation has been rendered moot -- how soon will it be before you haters give it a second go? Never? Only if on cable?

No one who disliked it is willing to give it a second shot in the theater, are you? Except for Amerikuracana, who didn't exactly hate it the first time.

How many films you dislike get a second go at theaters? (How many you like for that matter?)

Film is making enough money, you dont need to push multiple viewing from people that disliked the film.

Not as bad as I thought. I read all the spoilers and really expected a disaster. Actually enjoyed it. A bit sad Luke died and didnt really teach/train Rei . Kylo Ren was much better than the previous film. Rose wasnt as bad as I thought she woould be. Finn was a bit weak and with all the SJW talk I was expecting a more prominent role from Finn or at least be somewhat competent. that purple headed admiral was annoying and was like a head of a women's studies department. Rei was ok. Snoke needed more back story. I think the better movies will be set in the past rather than the star wars future. Not bad tho.

I was thinking about giving it a second go around with a friend who hasn’t seen it but I don’t know if it’s worth it. I kind of don’t want to support this movie as I feel like they didn’t try at all and released a piece of crap that they know will sell because it’s Star Wars. I’d rather watch Shape of Water or something.

It's funny that many who hated it went to see it again right away. It's like you're trying to force yourself to like it. How much money did you just give them for a movie you claim to hate? That's not going to help the next movie be any better with that mentality. Also since when did seeing a movie twice with in days really change one's perception?

I paid twice and only saw it once...I was having a fever on the way to the theatre and during the previews I was really suffering. Air conditioning was blasting but I was sweating buckets.
