Underwhelming is the definition of this movie. Im not a huge SW fan but im disappointed for other reasons.
Story is generic, there is no final epic battle and the master/apprentice storyline is boring because it isolates two important characters from the main conflict.
I like that Rian wants to change it up because TFA felt like a rehash, but his story and execution need work. Might be the most dull SW movie.
I will agree Luke was handled wrong but y'all have discussed that already.

I can't speak for anyone else, but a female in a high profile position doesn't bother me the slightest. One of my fav on screen characters of all time is Ripley in the first two Alien films (fuck me that Disney now owns Aliens). It's when it's done at the expense of men, that's when I have an issue. Pretty much every guy in this movie is either an irrational buffoon, trigger happy danger, evil capitalist, or a metaphorical Nazi. Considering female actions made things worse, I guess everyone is a retard in this film lol. Luke was smart to check out.

That's basically the method of this film though, build someone/something up at the expense of another. That can work, but it needs to make sense, or be written well. They basically shat on the original lore and replaced it with garbage. They killed off Snoke and and replaced him with the very unscary Kylo who couldn't beat Praetorian guards on his own, let alone defeat Rey, who has two days of training at best so far.

I'm interested to see how they make Ep 9 compelling. So far they've shown no plan/arcs in their story telling. Hopefully the backlash makes them take things seriously, because they are on the verge of destroying a money making machine. Sadly, they've already destroyed the lore for many. The new Han Solo origin movie sales/critiques will be interesting.

I didn't like the writing at all in TLJ, and for me, it made TFA worse retroactively by not building on anything from that film.

I don't care about anyone in the story. Not one character.

That lightspeed attack was freaking glorious! The only problem is that it makes everyone in the previous few millenia look inept (SW spans thousands of years with the old Republic). It takes away how frightening the Death Star wars too. Surely someone would have thought of it. I still say that Admiral Allah Ackbar should have done it lol

I agree with you on enjoyment though. As much I hate the new trilogy thus far, I was thoroughly entertained by TLJ, what a paradox. it didn't feel long to me at all, even though the running time was near three hours. I remember feeling fatigued in the 3rd Lord of the Rings movie, even though I remember it fondly.

Accelerating a mass into your opponent has been a huge problem in science fiction for sixty years. If you start from far enough out, and move it fast enough, a relatively tiny mass can wreak unimaginable havoc on any size of ship. The Death Star is just a huge, expensive target.

Well the Death Star was FAR larger than the ship that was destroyed in TLJ, and in TLJ even after ramming it at light speed the First Order's ship was still intact enough that Finn and Rose were able to survive.



So why do you hate them if you had fun watching the movie?

I hate to get nit picky with real world physics in a magical space opera, but the first order ship was sliced in half and rendered useless. I'm sure the Rebels could have rounded up a few more clunkers and did the same to the Death Star, at least its firing mechanism. That lightspeed attack kinda puts past efforts/fears in doubt when you go back, affecting suspension of disbelief.. It's another example of the new trilogy doing something at the expense of previous material.

There are a lot of movies I enjoyed that annoyed me, like the first independence day film, or the SW prequels. There's too much idiocy in either to get into, but they were still fun. TLJ does a lot of annoying things too, but the fact they shit on old material and push identity politics really irks me further. It's still highly enjoyable though, but empty, kinda like banging a hot chick you want to kick out of bed once you blow your load because she has no substance beyond her looks/body.

Not even BB-8? He's the only new element I love. I liked the penguin thing too, but i always have a soft spot for cute characters.

Kylo was the only new living character I was interested in. He's the only one to have a shred of an arc. Looks like he regressed back to emo Kylo by the end of TLJ though.

Clearly Rian and co. wanted a big moment and were willing to let the logic of the scenario and the questions it raises take a backseat in order to have it. Both showings I went to, when Laura Dern starts to turn the ship around and the FO officer tells Hux that the cruiser is preparing to jump to lightspeed, the audience excitement was audible.

What I think is going to be interesting is seeing how JJ handles the situation with Episode IX. Does he do a lot of "course correcting," as @BisexualMMA says that he needs to do, or does he fully embrace Episode VIII and enthusiastically build on top of it.

I was underwhelmed.

I just saw it and I'm not going to go into detail, although it's incredibly amusing how rustled some in this thread are about how many women held positions of power in this film. Grow a pair, boys. You sound sad and pathetic.

I will say that I was incredibly disappointed with Luke in this film. After decades hearing about him being one of the most powerful Jedi in history, it would have been incredibly sweet to see him actually in action before dying. The fake out with the force projection was particularly painful. I've always said that new films are for new characters, but this is Star Wars, and Luke. If you're going to have him in there, he should be insanely powerful. We got nothing. Worse than nothing, they teased an epic finale, and gave us a fake out.

I thought that it was an awesome display of jedi power - to jedi mind trick hundreds of people to see and feel your presence lightyears away from where you were sitting indian style -- mind blown. I did hate that it wound up killing him. There was no foreshadowing for that and it was an obvious copout to dump Hammill (which he probably welcomed based on the videos of him shitting on the movie). It was also anticlimactic in that this should have lead to Luke getting picked up and building the Rebellion around him. I'm still a annoyed by that, but its tempered by the fact that there isn't anybody worth coming back to defeat. Unless they introduce another ancient cgi sith lord out of nowhere...

Driver seems to be getting broad praise, even among many of the film's detractors. I've seen a bunch in here saying they think Kylo Ren is one of the best aspects of the new trilogy. Hard to argue. Driver was damn good in this last one.

I know I'll sound like a cynic- especially since I was one of the people who really enjoyed Anchorman 2 while many despised it- but whenever there is like a 12-20 year gap between a film and its sequels, it definitely raises a red flag in my mind. If they couldn't get the people to commit to it when there was a ton of momentum and a lot of incentive for it, it certainly seems a little problematic when stars come back together for another one when momentum and interest has waned.

There are, of course, exceptions.
