STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS Official Thread v.6

People here have agreed with me.

Some have criticized my views IRL by saying "if you wanted the old Starwars go watch the old Starwars". First of all I didn't want the old Starwars, I wanted a decent film. In fact this film suffered from being a shitty ripoff to the old trilogy. Even small things like someone summoning a lightsabre out of the snow was copied.

The problem with this movie is that major parts of it were just plain bad. I agree with some posters here that the first half was decent and it started off well (although I wasn't a big fan of Han and Chewies intro). You cannot help but compare it to A New Hope because it is a poor carbon copy.

I beg someone to compare the destruction of Death Star 3 to the original and argue that they are equal. Forget Starwars and forget nerd shit, the original destruction of the Death Star was a cinematic masterpiece. The iconic quotes, brilliant use of models, the suspense the amazing characters all worked together to make a great scene. You will remember and quote the original Death Star scene until the day you die. Will you be quoting this one?

You enjoyed this movie because you got to see the old characters again, you got the see the force, you got to see lightsabre duels and there were X-Wings. You probably even liked the fact there was an even bigger Death Star. But take a step back and think about what was truly iconic and well done in the movie. What part of the movie would you consider 'art'? What part justifies it being preserved for future generations?

I don't think there is any reason this movie shouldn't have been as good as A New Hope. With Disney money that should have been achievable.
Don't get me wrong, i much prefer the new hope and empire strikes back. Even Revenge of the sith.
I see your point now.
New Hope is vastly superior in everyway. But I think this one is great too, even if it seems like a rehash. i loved the new characters, the girl playing rey was fantastic.
the space battles, the direction, the fact that they didn't overused CGI and used practical effects/costumes for bigger immersion, the humor too.
Maybe be i liked it that much because nostalgia kicked in, but Saying this movie is a complete failure is exaggeration imo.

My ranking of star wars movies
5
4
6

I dont acknowledge any of the other 4 as star wars movies.
But if you pressed me to rank them i would say that the phanton menace was the less worst of them.

And this gigantic pile of elephant poo was the worst of them all.
This shit is worse than transformers.
At least michael bay TRIES and dont shoehorn political correctness in the movie.

Fuck rey, mary sue type of character.
And specially fuck Kylo. He looks and behaves like justin bieber.

That is the villain guys. Justin bieber. Lovely
Fuck this generation.

Its not "that wasn't all he said"

He never said that at all

He didn't like Finn because the only reason the character exists at all is so the movie can have a black guy in a lead role. Just like Jar Jar if Finn was removed from the script altogether it would not effect the plot at all, if not make for a better movie. (the character isn't quite as useless as jar jar, but its close)

If they cast a white guy in Finn's place it wouldn't make the character any better.
Nobody wouldve mentioned it if the character was a white guy. It just wouldve been another guy in the movie.

And I quote bluesandwiches "but they have to push that interracial agenda don't they?.....you have no backstory of this character or why he does the things he does or his motives. He even speaks ebonics. not kidding."

What ebonics did he speak? Did he call someone "cuz" or something?
Whats the problem with having a black guy in the movie?

1. Star Wars 9.5/10 - Dark (burned corpses, an entire planet destroyed, fighter pilots picked off one by one) but fun, near-perfect space opera
2. Empire Strikes Back 9/10 - Most soap opera-ish of the OT (familial twists and turns, angsty vibe, cliffhanger ending) but with classic set pieces
3. Return of the Jedi 7.5/10 - Falters in some of the Endor scenes but starts and ends strong and is overall still a ripping yarn
4. Force Awakens 7/10 - Fun new characters and a breathless pace which leaves it feeling less epic than any of the OT
5. Revenge of the Sith 5/10 - McDiarmid is gold, Portman is pretty, final battle is nifty, but overall paced poorly and characters are dull
6. The Phantom Menace 4/10 - Tatooine scenes are best part of the PT, in fact it would be 6.5/10 if not for Jar Jar
7. Attack of the Clones 2/10 - Only good part is Anakin beating the crap out of the sand peeps who kidnapped his mom

I saw the originals in the theater, and honestly I always thought they were bad movies. Other then the revolutionary special effects of the time they were just poor stories with poor acting and irrational plots.

Um... why is this is in the wr?
lol probably expecting people would get pissy at him for not wanking over the film, like so many others are?
idk, i think it's a fair expectation
star wars fanboys are redic :hmph

I hate unneeded CGI in films. A lot of modern Sci fi films look like cut scenes in a video game. They even use CGI in crap films like 2fast2furious2thestreets. And it really stands out to me. Terminator 2 has the best CGI and it came out in 91!. All this modern blur motion CGI looks like shit.

Lucas and the prequels almost come across as daring when compared to this cookie-cutter cynical bs. Like somebody said, even a senile Lucas managed to stumble his way on to directing a few memorable scenes, and most of all he didn't just remake the originals. FA only has a few nice dogfights and about half the cast is good, while the other is cringeworthy but only because of the script, which is like 'an idiot's guide' to the original trilogy. Also, how ho-hum was the score? All the key moments used samples from the originals. The only new score that sort of stood out was in the last scene...which btw was not cool, this is not a freaking tv cliffhanger.

This is the best that self proclaimed SW super nerd JJ could come up with? and all that talk of him and Kasdan capturing the original essence...you can't just crib previous work. It's like they really took to heart what Lucas says about "everything rhyming" in the SW saga and went full tard.

4) Every character is a kid, like 18 yrs old. In Empire strikes back, Harrison Ford was almost 40 years old... Luke and Leia were full grown adults, people loved it. Now we get BB8, which is a little kid robot. ...if you can imagine a thing.
its Disney & its still basically a movie for children,.....just like Marvel Movies.

I have already heard an interview with the girl who plays Rey.....Cringed when I heard her being asked about the character being a 'good/strong role model' for young women.

I'll catch it in a couple of months i really have no big interest in it although I actually liked the original 3,have never watched the prequels

Star wars LOL. Can't wait to see it and give my critique.

If what you say is true then its going to be funny hearing people defend crap.

Movies for broad audiences and kids ruin everything. The best movies are R rated hands down or 'racist/sexist' like the old top classic films made before the 1950's.

Only good kid movies are animated and made by disney basically. But I feel every time they try to make it so 'widely' appealing it f#cks things up. Its STAR WARS how is a kid friendly 'strong young woman' realistic or even relevant?

Same plot points and set pieces of the original trilogy, rehashing them and overlaying them with modern visual effects, adding nothing new or exciting.

The main reason why I give it an 8 instead of a 9 is because of Abram’s continued inability to grasp the scale of interstellar space.

When the Starkiller weapon destroyed the Hosnian System, the beam should not have been visible from Maz Kanata's castle! Hell, even if Hosnian Prime was in the same system, they shouldn't have seen the planet's destruction in as much detail as they showed.

One thing that I noticed is that some elements of the new expanded universe novels make more sense. The events of this movie give a Doylist reason for Mon Mothma's plan in Aftermath to
cut the size of the New Republic's fleet to 10% to serve as a peacekeeping force and central reserve, while using the funds that would've gone to the other 90% to equip and train the military forces of the Republic's member worlds.

At the time I read it it didn't make much sense, but now it's clear they were trying to preemptively plug a plot hole from this movie.
The Republic Fleet that was destroyed in the Hosnian System represents only 10% of the New Republic's total military strength. The other 90% is still intact but spread over the Planetary Security Forces.

Oh I know right. Every thing else in the series was realistic until they ruined it with a woman who knows how to think.

i really enjoyed it, but a lot of the scenes seemed like they just copied the from the original movies, also they built up Kylo like some badass mofo then basically by the end you realize hes weak af

I agree with some of the stuff being put out there and I'm well aware this movie wasn't perfect, but you'd be a damn liar if you say you didn't have a blast watching this movie.

I had a smile painted on my face the whole time minus the part we all know.

I cant rank it yet, but I can easily say its in my top 3. Call it my Star Wars holy trinity being ep. 4 5 7.

I really do not understand why people defend it saying that it had to please the fanbois. I am one and I am pissed that it was a remake of the original and not a very good one at that. It actually makes me appreciate ep 1-3 more because atleast Lucas tried to do something new. Hayden Christensen is almost universally hated for Anakin but Adam Driver oh so edgy, such conflict!

Imma cry and go play SW:KotOR while thanking Bioware for not blasting diarrhea at my face.

i have no idea what any of that was lol ive never seen stars wars nor do i know anything about it xD

but wasnt saying it had to please fan boys, just that theres a lot of love for the franchise, so op prolly thought speaking negatively about one of the films would have caused an argument. especially since this one has been much anticipated. brb, people waiting a week in line, wtf?? (do people that do this even have lives? should they receive mental help? no joke, i wonder honestly)
