The captain in STD looks so petite too. You would think Starfleet would have some standards in that regard. If she gets into a fist fight with one of those monstrous-looking Klingons, it is going to be comedic.

Yup, a 5'8" 160lbs Picard though....pretty menacing. Definitely the defining quality for command officers on a spaceship.

But that would have been fine if the remaining characters were done well. Since they werent, it sucked.

Every follow-up Star Trek series took time to develop the main characters. There are a lot of people that tuned out after the first episode and just didn't give Voyager a chance. I was one of them. I have started watching it in syndication. While it was definitely the worst series of the bunch, not ever episode was terrible.

I initially didn't like him in the role for exactly that reason. However, he was such a great actor that I overlooked it as the series went on.

I think the issue here is that we don't even know what the female roles in Discovery will actually look like.

Strong female roles? No problem there IMO. Buffy is a prime example, btw. Remember the final season when she commanded the whole gang of slayers? That's not dissimilar to the role of a captain.

I get your general gut feeling regarding SJWness in series and movies. But if the story makes sense, what's the issue?

Like I said, we'll wait and see. But her staring down the alien menace is sort of an indication of where it's going, imo. I'll reserve judgment until the final product.

I still have no earthly idea why you aimed any of this at me.

Or why you posted that terrible gif.

Well, because Im responding to your points and questions. Most of which are given directly to me. Who should I aim them at?

While I love to nitpick everything about Star Trek, I do find some of the comments about new show, or who is on the crew, pretty discouraging. Why not wait until the show actually airs before disparaging it? Ultimately, Star Trek is about the progression of mankind, and exploring humanity through, science, technology, exploration, politics, and relationships between the crew. Of course its going to push social issues boundries, and try new things. That's the point of Star Trek.

"If we cannot learn to actually enjoy those small differences, to take a positive delight in those small differences between our own kind, here on this planet, then we do not deserve to go out into space and meet the diversity that is almost certainly out there."

"I believe in humanity. We are an incredible species. We're still just a child creature, we're still being nasty to each other. And all children go through those phases. We're growing up, we're moving into adolescence now. When we grow up - man, we're going to be something!"

"Star Trek was an attempt to say that humanity will reach maturity and wisdom on the day that it begins not just to tolerate, but take a special delight in differences in ideas and differences in life forms."

A few of my favorite Gene Roddenberry quotes.
