Squatting 405: One year for 4 plates

I'm enjoying the 531 progression. I've had to take a strength cut, but I feel like I've returned to a better place. The linear stuff was fun, but for me, its all about volume and recovery.

Anyway, I am really hoping to hit it this year. I really think that I can if I continue this route.

You seem to be making pretty good progress so I think 405 is in the books.

I was thinking about my own issues on the way to the gym today and I think my squat issues are linked to stopping my Muay Thai training. We did a lot of stretching at MT plus all of the kicks helped keep my hips mobile. Since stopping all I do is one day of mobility work plus whatever I do in my lifting sessions to warm-up and it has proven to not be enough to combat a full-time desk job.

My goal is 3 plates by the end of the year. I am at 2 plates right now.

My biggest issue right now is that I myself still weight in excess of 400 so I need to be careful for the sake of my knees and ankles.

keep it slow and steady don't rush trying to put too much weight too fast. There is a bunch of mobility stuff online, you can find some stuff that can help you.

Nice. You buried that one.

Pretty much decided Olympic squats would hit the quads more so I chased this goal from there. I'll retry a max soon at my normal gym and see what I can do there.

This.

One of the guys I train with is nearly that big, a carries it quite well - he's built like a strongman competitor, and very strong, as well as being quite fit for his size. But carrying around that much weight also really limits his training, and he knows it, so his first priority is to lose weight.

In theory I am... in practice my squat feels like garbage and I probably need to fix some mobility issues before I can make any good progress.

Also for sure stop this nonsense:

As usual on Monday's I couldn't get a squat rack so instead I did some lower body stretching and planks.

I'm pretty sure I remember you were far more actively progressing in all the lifts when you were training MT.

I feel ya, the hip health thing is my biggest battle right now. I work a desk job, 12 hour days and I don't even get to get up and walk around much (I have to monitor a bunch of stuff continuously). The way I've gotten around it is doing the lifts that require more hip mobility (back squats, deadlifts) on my off days and do bench, OHP or front squats days that I'm working.

I also try to sit in a squat position unloaded or with just the bar for a few minutes each day which really helps and use a foam roller as needed.

I've been seeing this guy a lot lately. Who is he, another weak YouTube lifting guru trying to cash in on rehashing the same basic information for the billionth time?

Or maybe it's just you who keeps posting him. No idea.

Guess I'm a shit squatter. I've never even put a moment's thought into what my elbows are doing in a squat

You would be correct. It also helped that I had lower stress levels back then.

Strongman competitor
Now that you're butthurt by him I will post everything he makes

I think you need to check urban dictionary for the definition of "butthurt".

Fill your boots, though. That'll show me.

I would say Alan is one the most logical people of youtube when it comes to conveying information on strength training, as well as being a decent teacher. Pretty matter of fact and not shrouded in a ton of philosophy. There a few others, but the vast majority seem to hit some "bro" tones on occasion.

I love Alan's videos. The guy does a really good job with all the details while delivering it in a way that keeps your attention.
