So, what is the deal with Jones' wrestling credentials?

Heres all the creditials you need to see. Taking down an undefeated Olympic Wrestler who had never been taken down or lost a round in MMA:

Jones is a beast, hope he comes back soon. Love the way he fight minus pokes.

Sure, so long as they don't take him down and pound his head into mush against the floor.

But that's assuming Jones wouldn't be able to to punch and kick them, and it would only be a straight up wrestling match. Remember, in wrestling, it's all out wrestling, and the reason why all the wrestling moves would work is because there are set rules, and a wrestler doesn't have to THINK about strikes coming at him. Those guys wouldn't just blindly shoot in on him in a fight.

And look at the pic. He's 3rd place. That obviously means he's no pushovers among the best of the best in that tournament. You act like he was some bum that was getting tea bagged at will against these guys. He could hold his own in the wrestling department, whereas, I think if you let them strike, the gulf between that department would be far wider than just the wrestling. And the gulf between their wrestling skills isn't like Romero vs. some college level wrestler.

So, pretty much he could've been on the level of Hendricks, Phil Davis, etc. if he continued on, or got better grades with the potential of making the Olympic team?

So, basically, he was just as good as the best guys in the UFC in terms of wrestling, minus DC, and Romero. But with the potential to have been on DC and Romero's level?

Definetly not on the level of Hendricks, Johny was a 3x Champ, Jones's Juco title was impressive...but their are tons of JUCO Champs in the UFC as we speak. Definetly could have been a multiple time All-American, but I doubt he would've won a Title. His Mat Wrestling isn't as spectacular as many think, his Greco/Folkstyle just translates perfectly into MMA for his size

Is it true that if he didn't have a baby to take care of, he would've had a full ride scholarship to one of the best wrestling colleges, and had Olympic potential? I heard or read that somewhere. Anyone got the full details?

Yeah, he was a major prospect and had a full ride scholarship ready to go before he diverted into MMA. Who knows how well he would have done. He spent his prime years training MMA and becoming a champ there instead of taking the Cormier route and we all know how that ended up.

Jones really never got taken down too much in Wrestling, at the calibur of wrestling he was at, he mostly won or lost matches by 1-3 points, most high level wrestlers who face other high level wrestlers win by an escape point or a reversal...takedowns aren't as common so there is a good chance no one took Jones down

He was not an undefeated wrestler, where did you get that crap from? Cormier had losses and never was a Div 1 champion. Well, not really fair since it was Sanderson that beat him but he was not undefeated.

No dude, it is assuming that the other two guys in the picture are better than Jones back then at the one aspect of martial arts that they had actually trained in. It is crazy to think they wouldn't be able to get off a takedown in a real fight and fuck him up.

Statistically, it takes all of approximately 30 seconds, in real fights, to get to the ground. I highly doubt Jones would be wrecking them, just because he is Jones, back then.

In one of his first college wrestling tournaments, Jones faced off against Division-I competitors from the likes of Iowa, Iowa State, Nebraska and Missouri.

He beat all of them

Yep, exactly my point. That poster was acting like Jones was just getting rolled over against these guys.

Read the above post. Stop acting like Jones would be chopped liver against these guys.

He beat quite a few Div 1 guys including Max Askren.

Iowa Central is known as a sort of feeder school for great wrestlers that don't have the grades. It's not your average community college. Who knows how high he could have gone since he's a bit of a headcase and so much of wrestling is mental, but he definitely had the physical potential.

Talking about what "could have been" is stupid. Fact is, he never tried to make a world team and he never will. He is not on the level of Romero, DC, Askren or even King Mo

MMA is different man, it's a lot easier to get taken down when you are up in a striking stance versus in a low wrestling stance
