Islam has multiple defences of his LW title. Ilia had 1. Big difference. I can understand feeling Islam needs to fight at WW to get up the ranks. He isn’t in league with GSP, Jones, etc but ilia isn’t even remotely in league with Islam let alone any actual GOAT so fuck him.

Can someone please explain to me why people care that Ilia needs to fight someone else before getting a title shot, it makes no sense and if anything gives him more of a reason to fight less and retire? There is no case to be made that he deserves it as he does not deserve anything in 155 and he is lucky he never had to fight people like Jean Silva or Arnold at 145 and that Josh Emmet was his toughest 5 round fight. Ilia cannot erase the fact he was knocked out for 1 sec in his last LW fight so he needs to just own it and run through the division like he did at FW. What he is doing now is backfiring and eventually the people supporting it are going to get angry that he is not just fucking fighting. The guy is setting himself up for failure and if he is so confident, why not go beat the fuck out of someone at 155!

From a merit-based perspective, if someone has 5 or more consecutive title defenses I think a case can be made for a title shot in a new division.

A case CAN be made but it shouldn't be as simple as an arbitrary number. What's the line up of contenders at ww looking like? Who is waiting for a title shot at LW? Are there top 5 ranked fighters coming off of win streaks in either division the champ hasn't beaten recently?

Many things could come into effect for these fights to materialize

Islam has plenty of contenders right now he could defend against. There's no shortage of guys here. He has excuse for not simply fighting any of the above like he's presently doing just sitting out twiddling his thumbs. As usual though, he's seemingly instead hoping they all get frustrated and fight each other for him. Max already did go and take the Poirier fight even though really he kinda was like the #2 contender. Ilia moving up too did complicate that for him though but beating Poirier does re-solidify him if he's got wins over Gaethje and Poirier so I understand his reasonings.

Expect Islam to magically reappear in the fall after everybody's already got other fights and announce he'll arbitrarily fight one of the winners 6 weeks from their fight and they need to shut up and accept that outrageousness.
