So if Islam moves up to 170 he has to fight a contender first right?

define discredit?
It's not discrediting him to highlight that 2 of his defenses are against a FW. Or 1 is against a short notice opponent. It's not discrediting if it's true. It's called putting everything in proper context. Just like saying that LeBron's title with the Lakers happened during the bubble and a lot of other good teams didn't force their star players to play in the bubble while LeBron basically forced the Lakers to play in the bubble. It's not a slight to say that the Clippers had a better team on paper but their full team didn't participate in the bubble season. It's the truth.

And if it walks like a duck, swims like a duck and quacks like a duck then he's a duck. If Illa had to drop his title and then is being requested by Islam and his team to fight a contender before fighting Islam then Islam should drop the LW title and fight Sean Brady before he gets to fight for the WW title.
“If I beat him, what will that do for me? Everyone will once again say that I beat a featherweight, But if people really want to see him lose, then we can do it.”

From a merit-based perspective, if someone has 5 or more consecutive title defenses I think a case can be made for a title shot in a new division. If you have 1 title defense, I think most people would agree that's not enough. So 1 more defense for Islam, then yes. Ilia, no. From a showbiz perspective, UFC will do whatever they want.

Most defenses at 155 where he showed up, not his fault that his opponents were getting injured in training. I'd say Islam has earned his right to fight for the WW belt if he moved up. Now, if he himself became injured leading up to this hypothetical shot and pulled out? Then of course he would have to fight a contender at 170 as well.

Agreed. It's been a very strange road for him.
The only other one I can actually compare him too is Khabib.
Khabib earned his TS by beating RDA but then he gets injured and RDA beats Pettis to become champ. Then Khabib should've fought Alvarez for the title but Khabib gets used as a pawn to get Alvarez to agree to fight McGregor without a new contract. The UFC actually sent Khabib 2 contracts for the Alvarez fight to pressure Eddie. There was a video circulating around of Khabib actually signing the contract and Khabib saying "look I signed. Now Eddie must sign." Then we have the whole fiasco with Tony Ferguson and Khabib fights Ragin Al for the LW title. Then he beats McGregor and gets suspended and is out of competition for over a year. Then he only defends 2 more times and retires.

Very strange roads for the cousins to take.
good point about Khabib. seems both of their careers have been pretty inconsistent with cancellations.
i'll bet there's some sort of conspiracy floating around out there about this.

You couldn''t just read whenever some dumb guy says exactly the same thing in every thread on the topic pretending Ilia has done anywhere close to as much as Islam instead of making a new thread on it?

Ilia doesn't have to either if he'd like to stay at FW for several more years and get the win streak record, title defense record in his own division and become #1 p4p and give multiple shots to the previous champ below him. Until then, Islam has twice the UFC win streak in both time and number of wins, and 4x as many title defenses, and considering how inactive Ilia is, that could take decades to match.

Just like what him and his team want Illa to do before he gets a TS at 155.

Why is Islam and his team making Illa jump through hoops but he's to cakewalk himself into a 170 title fight?

Thoughts?
Volkanovski....

maybe he has to fight ddp at mw first then he can get the 170 champ fight, then he can fight conor and jon jones sometime in the next 20 years.

my thoughts is wondering why you made some dogshit thread parroting every other thread mentioning Islam, thinking that it was some fresh idea when it fact its just an excuse for you and the rest of the whiny haters to have a spiteful bitch.
As if the other dozen dumb fuck hate threads werent enough.

Can someone please explain to me why people care that Ilia needs to fight someone else before getting a title shot, it makes no sense and if anything gives him more of a reason to fight less and retire? There is no case to be made that he deserves it as he does not deserve anything in 155 and he is lucky he never had to fight people like Jean Silva or Arnold at 145 and that Josh Emmet was his toughest 5 round fight. Ilia cannot erase the fact he was knocked out for 1 sec in his last LW fight so he needs to just own it and run through the division like he did at FW. What he is doing now is backfiring and eventually the people supporting it are going to get angry that he is not just fucking fighting. The guy is setting himself up for failure and if he is so confident, why not go beat the fuck out of someone at 155!

he has 4 defenses. thats more than 1 defense.
also people shit on his resume when they dont realize Islam has had one of the weirdest fight schedules ever

had to fight Bobby Green because he was supposed to fight Dariush, but Dariush got injured and Bobby stepped in on 2 weeks notice.

had to fight Dan Hooker cause he was supposed to fight Dos Anjos, but then Dos Anjos got injured and Hooker stepped in on short notice. they tried to book Islam vs Dos Anjos like 4 times and every time one of them was either sick or injured.

was gonna defend vs Charles but then Charles got injured so Volk stepped in off the couch.

and just last time when he beat Moicano, he was supposed to fight Arman in a rematch and Arman got injured like 3 days before. Moicano stepped in super late notice.

maybe "Father's Plan" was code for some curse or hex onto Islam's opponents, because i cant recall a fighter with so many fights being cancelled or changed due to opponents dropping out via injury/sickness.
<bullseye>

Nobody gave him credit for beating #1 p4p Volk, so why would he want another unproven FW at LW? If Topuria beats Oliveira or some other top LW first then it'd make sense for him.

I wonder if the same people saying he's ducking Topuria are the same people discrediting his resume saying he only defends the title against FWs.
had a similar thought.

lol Islam will 100% get an immediate shot at the WW title.

I don’t mind it just like I think Ilia could get an immediate title shot at LW.

- both cleaned out their divisions and there’s nobody left to fight.

- It would be a massive PPV event given how popular both are.

- Stylistically it could be a Islam v Volk 1 type of high level MMA showcase

- It will freshen up the LW division if Ilia wins because all Islam has right now are rematches.

170 has so many contenders that have earned being in the title mix, that it would be insane to stall that division while it's on the rise with legitimate competition with letting Islam jump the line. Everyone wants to complain about Ilia jumping the line at 155 when Islam has already gutted 155 basically.

So instead of stalling a flourishing division, make Islam vs Ilia since that matchup is a fresh matchup for Islam, & would be a massive fight/draw for the company, while 170 plays out without being stagnant or having title contenders knock each other off.

I get the logic, but by defending against Volk, he's more than earned his title shot. I want Topuria fight over Islam/Belal, but whatever Islam is the guy who is going to spend the rest of his life after fighting hearing about how he only fought FWs.
