Skill set, GSP vs Jones

Jones in very skilled but i say GSP by mile when comes to skill and technigue. Jones use lot just brute strenght and size his opponents

This may come as a shock but the ability to use your body well to implement techniques is SKILL. That's why guys who weight and have Jon Jones height can't do what he does. He's skilled. Just like GSP can take guys down... He's built for 170 and explosive....not necessarily best technique but gets job done. That's still skill

LOL at gsp having better jits than bones. Bones has submitted top level guys. gsp couldn't even finish dan hardy and held his arm for an entire round. Its not even close imo, Bones wins every category.

I like the way you think and agree GSP is a better fighter. This may butt hurt some Jones fans but he doesn't seem to have as many as GSP anyway.

You are a known GSP hater your opinion is invalid as usual.

st pierre cuts more weight. so st pierre has the bigger size advantage in his weight class. i think jones is more skilled.

GSP is one of the smaller ww's lol. He cuts from 185-190. Kos, Fitch, Condit, Hendricks, Maia all cut from over 200. Other than BJ he's the smallest I can think of

Top level guys? If you consider Page and a MW Vitor top level lhw's you gotta sort yourself out. It's not 2005. Also Dan Hardy is one of the toughest guys in the division and anyone else woulda tapped

Jones cuts from about 220. I highly doubt any of those guys except Hendricks cut from "over" 200 pounds. Most MWs don't even cut from that much.

A fighter is more than the sum of his parts, and Jones is a better fighter than GSP.

I hope this post is a joke. I fear that it's not.

Jones is more skilled. He submits people with his Jiu Jitsu, unlike GSP, he has shown much more variety in his takedowns than GSP, and finishes with his GnP. Striking is a bit different, and I'd say GSP has the better technique than Jones, but Jones has beaten guys on the feet with more touted stand up than he. I would argue that his rangy fighting style helps this, but he is touched even less than GSP on the feet, so I don't think GSP's stand up defense could be considered better than his.

GSP has used more than a double/single leg in the past, but recently that's been the only takedown he's used and Nick Diaz was able to defend against a few. Jones has taken down pretty much everyone he's tried to.
Positionally, GSP probably knows more ins and outs than Jones does on the ground, but Jones's massive upper body makes his posture very difficult to control, so he's able to unleash devastating GnP.

Imo, Jones is more effective everywhere, while GSP is more technical everywhere.

So, trying to actually finish the fight is considered skill now? :icon_conf

I do agree that Jones clearly has the killer instinct, but I never considered it as skill.

Just my opinion though.

Knowing how to put your opponent into hopeless situations (i.e. KO or SUB him) is indeed a skill. There's a reason why not everyone can finish like Condit, JDS, Cain, Lauzon, etc. However, while Jones does have more of a killer instinct than GSP, the gap isn't that wide. Jones is naturally a more dangerous fighter, and I don't imagine that GSP could finish elite fighters as casually as Jones does even if he tried. People are often too hard on GSP, because they believe he purposely goes to decision. I think we overestimate his capacity to finish top guys. It's not as simple as Jones makes it look (nothing in MMA is as easy as Jones makes it look).

I am more of the opinion that Jones is a naturally skilled athlete with some physical benefits that he is able to utilize extremely well in his weight division.

GSP is in my opinion an average guy that has worked very hard to get in shape, learning proper techniques in multiple disciplines and posses an above average ability to transition those tools into his fights.

A few years ago I talked a great deal about how GSP would be more remembered for bringing a game plan to his fights than he would for being an exceptional fighter. I think Jones will be remembered for being an exceptional fighter.

To me they are opposites, yet both are exceptional in their own ways.

GSP's technique is more perfected imo. Jones gets away with a lot of stuff thanks to his reach and creativity.

GSP is better because he doesn't close his eyes when he punches.

Great post. This is the best way to compare the two. It seems counterintuitive that an athlete can be more effective while being less skilled, but it happens all the time. Jones is like MMA's Adrian Peterson. Great technique and dedication to his craft, but he whatever he may lack in skill, he'll simply make up for by being a cyborg. It's funny because MMA fans are always asking why fighters don't simply learn to wrestle like GSP did, or pick up striking like Jones. The answer, of course, is that they CAN'T. When we're talking about guys like this, they can really only be compared to each other.

Come on now. Before Jones came along, GSP was generally considered to be the UFC's best athlete. I do think people often overplay the "unathletic white guy" card with GSP. He's not Forrest or Fitch. He's a great natural athlete with a strong aptitude for martial arts.

Good point. If GSP is "unathletic" then I don't know how I get out of bed in the morning without tripping over my own feet and crapping myself.
