It's an unnecessarily high price for what you get.
wat? $169-179 is a premium? take a look at vulkan, koral, atama, lucky etc and report back...

Those are all overpriced when there are perfectly viable alternatives in the $90-$120 range. Unless the gi is truly offering something different (Datsusara comes to mind), there's no reason to pay any more than that for a gi. Quality is in the eye of the beholder, but there is no observable superiority in any of those more expensive gi's.
If you have the money and you want to pay more for a particular gi, that's your business. But no one should believe the hype that there's anything special about them.
Truthfully, the days of them being "unique" looking ended about a year and a half ago. I'm also ignoring the fact that Lucky came out first and did most of the same stuff on a larger scale then typically seen before. There are now a LOT of smaller gi comapanies that do the same thing and at comparable quality with either better service, cheaper prices or maybe even both.
But if you have the money I'm sure you'll enjoy it because there are only so many produced and the people who like them also like that added feature of the product.
As they say "When you see somebody with a SYR you know their ass is about some jiu jitsu"...
Since Koral and Atama raised their prices, I no longer support those brands unless there is a sale going on, and I would never buy a Lucky; however, one thing those companies have over SYR is customer service and the ability to replace defective products. With all the new brands that are coming out, I won't pay more than $150ish for a Gi, not including shipping.
I recall a thread several months ago stating that the price of cotton will go up gradually in the near future due to cotton crop droughts. Not sure if this is a scheme to create a false sense of shortages to manipulate the market or something but its affecting several textile businesses, not just for gis.
The drought in Pakistan is old news - 2 years ago. Crops have been fully recovered.
Cotton prices on the exchange have came down by far within the last 4-6 months.
Price of cotton started going up from Feb 2010 and Peaked at Feb 2011 (all time high). Then went down at went to its lowest point Dec 2011 (thats when I just placed my large order). Now the price has creeped back up.
others dont mind paying a little more for something very different (yeah its still a gi at the end of the day, but the colors, style etc are unique). not to mention the fit may be worth to someone else. I have owned keiko raca, vulkan, gameness, koral, and SYR. SYR hands down has the best fit for my body type, and thats worth the extra money right there.

I think what frustrates people is that SYR doesn't hold stock to replace defective or worn items. I understand "limited edition" but this is supposed to be a functional item for a combat sport. As to the fit, I can personally verify Ground Control has the same cut in the body and sleeve length, sleeve width is slightly longer and i've heard Ouano uses the same cut as well.
At the end of the day, everyone is going to choose the brand they want. I do love my SYR, but I don't wear it often and probably won't buy another.
The thing with the Internet (and life in general), is that we only hear about the bad stuff. I'm sure there are tons of SYR owners out there who are extremely happy with their gis, and would happily buy another. Unfortunately, very few of them post on internet forums...

its a fact known in the customer service world.I'm curious as to why someone who likes SYR would not be on this forum or would be considered less vocal? I sincerely hope you did not mean to imply that SYR fans put more time on the mat as it were because that would be an impractical assumption...
SYR has plenty of fans, lots of people who are ambivalent, people who have had a bad experience and then haters. Same with Atama, Gameness, Origin, Priya, Moya, Tatami, HCK, P and S, Lucky when it was the big new thing, not to mention the big guys like CSI, Ringside, Title, Fairtex, etc.
Most stuff on the gear section is pretty positive or perhaps cautiously optimistic.
