I am aware there is some differences in sign languages, but it sort of makes sense for everyone globally to learn the same sort of basic communication. Or am I missing something?

if you think sign language deserves to be thought, then you should believe braille should be thought in schools too.
I don't know about that mate, I have travelled quite a bit and I am working for a global company. I never have had any use for mandarin, even when doing business in Asia.ummm second most spoken language in the world should (and is used all over the world in the in business world too) perhaps be higher up the list than sign language.
