Shelling Up = Intellegent Defense?

Why did Faber just dry hump Barao's leg. You need to move when you start taking shots.

Faber was moving pay attention to his legs he was trying to get in a better position. Regardless he wasn't taking shots at that point he was getting tapped on the side of the arm due to successfully defending himself.

I think it is to certain extent. I think you have to wait for opportunities to try and stand up, reverse, attempt a sub, etc....but the guy is wailing on you for a minute straight and you are doing nothing then i'm ok with them stopping it because at that point we don't even know if you are too dazed or gassed to do anything.

Yeah but Faber gave the thumbs-up. So Herb should have known he was OK, right?

I think in that situation, usually the ref is warning the defending fighter to make something happen or he'll stop the fight. The refs usually give multiple warnings and therefore, the opportunity for the defending fighter to break out of the bad position and get back into the fight.

I agree that if the strikes are weak and not meaningful, then the fight shouldn't be stopped. For example, shogun mounted hendo for the entire 5th round in their fight but was so tired that his strikes were weak and the fight was never stopped.

If Faber was truly turtling up with both hands, getting mauled, then that would be another story.
Barao threw fast hammerfists on his hand and looked pleadingly at the ref.
