Many people have a problem with this incident because she is a woman and she's black.
But a guy like McEnroe built his brand off of him being the bad boy of tennis. It is a bit of a double standard.
John was a guy who didn't like to practice, didn't take tennis seriously and he was still extremely good at the sport. The older people hated it but the younger people Loved his over the top gimmick. His meltdowns were epic
Do you still not get it
He was still penalized points and even DQ'd for his behaviour on court, though.
Serena seems to also be treated like a rockstar by many people for "standing up to women's rights", so I don't see the difference here? What has race or gender to do with it? In what sense does that play any factor whatsoever to Serena's treatment, outside of those making excuses for her behaviour?
I'm sure that young people back in the day also saw McEnroe as a younger dude standing up to the rules created by old men. But in reality he was just an asshole.
People love to make excuses for their heroes, and sports stars love to have excuses made for their losses, especially if they are excuses that someone other than themselves believe (although they can live with just believing it by themselves). That's about all there is to this case.
