Serena Williams cries "discrimination" over drug testing

I mean she did go nuts but I guess that happens in all sports at the highest levels from time to time. Maybe a man would get a bit more leeway in the same situation. I can't make that call though. I do think a lot of the outrage here comes solely from racism though. Not everyone but def two handfuls worth of posters fit that category

I don't really remember her acting like this throughout her career tho.
I thought she was gonna go after that little chinese woman. I'll find a clip and post it here.

Yet a thread about him would never be created where this much hate is shown.

It is funny though if you notice th people who have a huge problem with this and then look at other posts of theirs you can easily see where they are coming from.
Yet a thread would never be created because I don't recall McEnroe ever whining when he was penalized by the refs that he was being discriminated against on sexist grounds, and because his career also ended decades ago.

When you analyze the posts of those who repeatedly demonstrate a blindness of confirmation bias to such simple absences of parallels, and then examine their other posts, it isn't hard to see what allows their own hatred and lack of self-awareness to fester in that vacuum.

He was penalized at times but his behavior built his brand. I don't see Serena building her brand by adopting a pro McEnroe type attitude for the game.

Some of The outrage here is def coming from a racist viewpoint. You can piece things together when it comes to certain posters here.

I don't want to get off on a tangent here but outspoken loud black athletes have not been historically loved by white america. I don't think that is a crazy thing to say either. There are plenty of examples to go around

Serena markets herself as a serious individual that stands up for social justice issues.

The seeming double standard here is one that Serena herself has created. She herself has occupied a position where she is required to stand out as an exemplary sports athlete, rather than a sore loser and a temper-tantrum throwing dickhead like McEnroe.

If she had built her "brand" as another McEnroe, sure, people would probably look the other way more than they have done in this scenario. But then those same people would probably also give way less credibility to what she says or does, out of the court. McEnroe's behaviour followed him forever, and wherever he went, he was always the "bad boy of tennis", nothing more. His otherwise successful career is mostly brought up because of his incidents on court, not because of all the wins he had. That is what people remember.

Lets face it, Serena doesn't want to be another McEnroe, because it would amount to her just being seen as a quirky individual with no great credibility, who is renowned by her bad behaviour on court. She is better off with people treating her recent outburst as an exception, rather than the rule.

You keep saying he built a brand off of it like this is supposed to mean something. Looks at any sport and you will find polarizing figures with fans and haters alike.

I don't know why it keeps changing WAS to WASNT. that's so weird. It's making things confussing.

I just don't think some of the posters here would criticize John the same way they're doing here. I made my point many times already. I know you understand what I mean.

I even gave lessons to little kids during the summer camps. Oh I most certainly got lucky because of my aunt and uncle.

There was a time I was playing a few hours every day for an entire summer with the club pros who were damn good players and again the following summers. I even got a lot of court time durin the winter. It was an indoor facility. I became a very strong club player at one point in time. I havent played in years and I really want to get back into it. Lessons with a good pro are close to a hundred An hour. That's pricey.

I had a wicked top spin forehand. I hit the ball real hard and I had a sick slice second serve.

My backhand was always my weakest aspect of the game and I should've practiced that side much much more. I like the one handed backhand also. And my first serve was decent but not amazing. I had a way better second serve.
You should start playing again. It's a good sport. My kid just joined the middle school team. He's a 5th grader but got asked to join them. So I hit with him. It's a good workout, and fun as you know. It's not too hard on you either. Well I guess you can make it as hard as you want.

mens tennis has always been less sexist towards the men than their female counterparts.

I don't think the judge made a decision based off of racism but I think a lot of the posters here are doing just that. I know you understand what I mean as well.

It's a very fake outrage by a select few people. Heck i don't think I would lump you into that category if you criticized her outburst. You just have a more reasonable stance on certain things like this.

She’s had plenty of incidents. The 2010 Open comes to mind and the French Open too. She’s just a bad loser. Gracious winner but terrible loser. Me saying that doesn’t make me racist either. Murray comes off as a bad loser too. Like a whiny lil biatch.

Does one outburst ruin your entire career. I'm not sure it cancels her entire career out, at least in my mind it doesn't.

True tennis fans also remember his history against Borg. That rivalry was legendary. It really cemented tennis at the time. People couldn't get enough of that drama and they both made each others careers in some sense.

For most part I agree with your post. You seem to be more of a level headed guy though.

You can say the same about tom Brady. It happens at the highest level from time to time.

Tennis is a one man show unlike team sports. I think it's looked at differently becasue of that fact

I don't mind playing it, but there's no comparison with combat sports and motorsports for me.

Once you start to get good it makes it so enjoyable. I love martial arts also. I'm not a motor sports guy at all though.

The pro circuit is a grind for sure. You take a beating in the heat and running like a maniac for hours at a time. Some matches go 5 hours.

That's nice I hope he enjoys himself playing. It's really fun once you get good at it and can rally basic and forth.

It doesn't and in this case, people are probably going to forget this whole event in a week and move on. Serena's career didn't end when she threatened to shove a tennis ball up an official's throat, and it won't be ended by this, either.

The only reason it was even in the head-lines, is because Serena attempted to work the social justice angle into it. But this was not really the time and place for that, not in my opinion. Because now you're bringing in interest from people who see this event as an extension of their politics, from one side and the other.

Anyway, as far as I'm concerned people blowing up in a high-pressure event is nothing out of the ordinary. The only reason I even commented on this is because I think that there's no real issue with "sexism" here. Just one athlete having a bad day at the office, letting a disagreement with the officials go to her head.

This happens in every sport and I don't really see the need to have a political conversation about it.

We have a few indoor courts around where I live that are nice. I played a couple of times a week last winter and plan on doing the same this winter. Turns into a pretty good winter sport!

I'm a one handed back hander also. Tried the double and it didn't feel right at all. My backhand slice I'd say is one of my best shots and everything else is still a work in progress. Forehand is getting there but not much top spin on it.

Yeah you should get back into it. I ran into a guy who also played alot growing up then stopped, and is now playing all the time (like 4 days a week) and has turned into a nut. You could be that guy!

Thanks Kong.

You should go to a tennis facility like an indoor club and ask if they can give you a basket of tennis balls they're planning on throwing out. After some time the balls wesr out and they don't move the same way from all the strain put on them. They're beaten up.

You can even make up a little white lie and say you want to use them for your sons youth tennis.

I'm sure they will give you some and just have your kid take a basket and serve until it is empty. Then pick them up and serve from the other side, left side. He doesn't need brand new balls to practice his serve at his current level. After doing this over time his serve will be much better than all the other kids. He's gonna want to do it though. You can't force him or he'll hate the game.

I agree with you. But like I said the outrage from quite a few here come from one place. You're not in that category though.

Tennis is looked at as a gentleman like game. It's sophisticated and upper crust because of the price it costs to play. This behavior isn't loved by the old shcool fans and I understand why.

There is a time and place and she was def over the top but the entire situation was fucked from the start

I’d say Brady’s more cheat than brat. But truthfully I do think that Serena’s had to deal with her share of racism and sexism over the years. Last few years she’s had a dream run from the media tho but she continues to act in a bratty, cringeworthy way and gets passes for it.
