Sean Strickland - I'm sick of seeing foreign flags in America

That well known Irish name......Felder..<36>
Just googled it to double check:

“The most commonly-observed ancestry found in people with the surname Felder is British & Irish, which comprises 29.0% of all ancestry found in people with the surname. The next two most common ancestries are French & German (18.8%) and Ashkenazi Jewish (11.7%).”

It’s hard to determine how bigoted Strickland actually is and how much is just said for attention.

Sean reminds me of a 15-19 yo channer who won’t stop quoting MDE skits.
Ditto, or Chael Sonnen, as the case may be.

I agree that American fighters should wave the Stars and Stripes or be denied a flag.

It is quite disrespectful to the home of the brave.

The day this nation is no longer considered a global “hub” of hyphens will be a glorious day. Just one facet of Making America Great Again.

That is why people with recent roots in other countries don’t wave our flag. They have been taught that this isn’t really a nation but an economic hub for a “better life”. It has no culture. No heritage. No identity. Taught that in our own school.

All post World War II as well. Don’t know why we win a big war and decide it’s time to be stupid and self defeating about everything. It’s like we unfroze The Thing. Wonder what it could be.

But should he be proud of his heritage or not. Who's allowed to be proud of it and who isn't?
Everyone is allowed to be proud of their heritage, where did I say otherwise? I’m not sure what you’re even getting at?

Maybe it's not you but the thread is about being sick of people who were born in America carrying flags from the country of their heritage. If you don't think that's a problem my bad.

What I said was I don’t think someone born and living in the States should be walking in with the flag of another country because even if they may have ancestry there they are now representing America.

That said, if Rocky Balboa wants to call himself the Italian Stallion I don’t have a problem with it, he’s still fighting as an American and wearing American flag shorts.

I don’t know if you think that’s contradictory, just my opinion but whatever it’s nothing set in stone.

I don't personally have a massive problem with either tbh. I think it's probably best to do the dual flag thing like Tito used to do where you show you love both countries though.

Ok then he’s American, of Irish descent.
I'm very sceptical of the ancestry claims of people from the USA. Even more so when it comes to 'Irish Americans', as people from the USA have a peculiar obsession with (their caricature of) Ireland. In fact USians saying "I'm Irish", "I'm Norwegian", followed by various comical but provocative statements and behaviours, is one of the commonest tropes about them.

What are you basing the idea that Felder is 'of Irish descent' on?

Wikipedia says he is of Irish and German descent. Apparently McGregor had a tweet battle with him, where Felder was saying he was Irish and McGregor was saying he isn't. The battle, and the original article have been taken down, but copies remain:

“I was talking to my producer because we have to do fighter meetings and hopefully we can get through that without any German comments,” Felder said on Thursday.

“My last name is German and I hate talking about this with people who aren’t American because I know I’m not Irish, I’m not German, I’m not Italian, I’m not Swedish! I’m American and I get that.

I also did not give myself the ‘The Irish Dragon’ nickname and, as a matter of fact, I fought against it for the first few fights of my pro career because I hated it and I thought it was stupid. It got put together because I did karate and Lyoto ‘The Dragon’ Machida was one of my favourite fighters and then this guy was like, ‘Well you’re Irish, how about The Irish Dragon?’

And then he started saying it on a YouTube video and the CCFC got hold of it when I was fighting for them so started calling me that for the one fight and it stuck. I’m not trying to claim any heritage. Obviously I’m of Irish descent if you take one look at me. You can also see the German in me with my better jawline.

[I can tell he's not Irish by taking one look at him, however only someone from the USA or possibly Canada would use the nickname 'The Irish Dragon', so I didn't even need to see a photo.]

I don’t know what there is to concede you fucken pikey, I assume he is because he says he is but I couldn’t care less either way.

If anything, I can imagine someone being ashamed of it and saying they’re not Irish, even if they are. Can’t think for the life of me why anyone would claim to be Irish if they’re not..

I’m basing it on nothing other than him saying he is. I can’t imagine why the fuck would anyone wanna be Irish if they’re not?

I don't really understand it either.

People from the USA are upset by their lack of ethnicity/heritage/culture etc.
They can't go with the British one because they aren't ethnically British, and the USA is supposed to be against that.
The Irish are seen as being opposed to the UK?
They are seen as being common people, fighting back against oppressive Imperial Power?
Conveniently, they usually speak English.

This is the best I can do.
