Yeah it's pretty much impossible to fault.
Spacey was perfect and although it'd be incredibly interesting to see other actors play the John Doe role, I can't imagine anyone topping what he did.

David Fincher is just a great director. With the possible exception of Alien 3 (6/10 for me) everything he does is good to great.

No, there was a simple subtleness on the surface coupled with towering ego just underneath that surface that required a certain patience to play the role of JD. Spacey nails that type of persona pretty well. I can see other actors playing the role well too, but not quite the way he could play it -if that makes sense.

I'm not a huge Spacey fan, but much like Pitt was perfect for Tyler Durden, Spacey was perfect for John Doe.

David Fincher is just a great director. With the possible exception of Alien 3 (6/10 for me) everything he does is good to great.

Alien 3 isn't great, but Fincher making a movie that decent with both hands tied behind his back by the studio is a fine achievement.

What this guy below said, Doe probably had an Envy Kill lined up but switched when he saw how interesting it would be to use Mills and his wife's head in the box.

You say its a weak spot but I call it one of the most interesting points of the film if not the most interesting point.

Imagine if it WASN'T Mills wife but "just" some other ladies head in the box, if one could ever say "just" about a head in a box.

Since you say you've watched it many times, I'm surprised you've missed this each time;

After mills and sommerset break into doe's apartment, doe explains on the phone call that he's had to alter his plans...

So there is no big flaw. It's a well written, well executed movie, and one of my personal favourites.

I love this movie, I own it and watched it many times.

I personally thought that the film doesn't hold up well. We have become desensitized by the constant psychological/crime vs Cops flicks over the years. This film came out before Law and Order SVU, which ushered in a slew of these shows and movies. Also I always thought the nameless protagonist/antagonist schtick was cliché

I love the movie. I thought it was very well done. But like others, I just don't get the sloth guy.

The victim never contributed to anything in his life so his punishment was to do nothing but waste away.

Also, you can't tell tell, but dude was a shaved sloth.
