Law Scalia Died today

Obama's appointments were relatively young as well. It's becoming a strategic move but I think one that both parties could regret. Even if you agree with a ideaology, in 40 years, the country could shift a lot. I will say though that didn't seem to matter with gay marriage so I don't worry too much about long terms.

Yeah they were a bit younger, 55 & 50, they'll be there with Roberts for along time.

RIP.

I'm sad to say that the first thing I thought about when I read this news was, "Who gets to appoint the next SC justice?"
I thought the same thing.

He seems to have passed well at least. He was 79 and died in his sleep without any major illness. Reminds me of how my grandfather died. I didn't know him very well because he lived in another country but I strangely felt good about how he died. He was in good health and had good mobility for his age, had a nice hot cup of tea after dinner, and his grandchildren gave him a massage until he fell asleep and passed at the ripe old age of 86. That's pretty much the ideal way to go. It was nice knowing he didn't suffer and lived a long life, higher than the US average life expectancy and 20 years higher than the average of his native country.

Fucking hell, just when you thought 2016 couldn't get any crazier! Especially with so many ground-breaking cases that will reshape our nation's future currently on the docket!

Scalia is hands-down my favorite Justice in the Supreme Court, and his dead-pan humor during tense situations is the reason why some people even take the time to read these court transcripts, and then they quickly realize how insightful his opinions really were.

At the end, whether you agree or disagree with Scalia's style of literal interpretation of the law, there's not a single shred of doubt that this Justice dedicated his life to faithfully serve the Republic and our Constitution, and he did so in earnest without giving a damn as to what anyone might think or which direction the political wind currently blows.

I saw the bit about done opposition due to his corporate practice... so is he not the guy that will overturn citizens united?

I wonder if Obama will make a point of making that a priority as Sanders and Shillery promise they will.

That's not really how it works. Whether he will or won't is up in the air, but it's unrelated to his private practice representing corporations.

Here's an idea Obama appoints himself lol.

if this happens, I'll start to give a modicum of credence to Ripsakter's posts as he's always mentioning (not sarcastically) that Obama is gunning for a third term.

and this:

Can't find much info as to why, but it was regarding national security in 2003. Smells like Patriot Act.
He was part of the legal team that argued the government's position in the various detainee challenges.

Get off Facebook, nothing good happens there.

Everyone on my Facebook has been fine. Almost all of my law school friends are leftists and every one of them is saddened by the news. But the people commenting on the news stories are awful.

I'm reading up on this guy and he sounds like the kind of SCOTUS we would all want -- balanced.
Hopefully he sees Citizens United for the abomination that it is.

yeah, I'm reading up on him. He seems apolitical, which is ideal, imo, for a SCOTUS appointee.

From what I'm gathering it's most likely that the senate will be able to block Obama's nomination if they choose. How much that will cost them is what I find interesting. This nomination can be used as a bargaining chip for Obama.

"All 3 branches of government will be in play for this election". that was how one CNN commentator put it. Democratic wins in the white house and senate would effectively destroy the GOP forever.
