Sad Day When Jones Retires

Dont worry ts, jones has been so inactive you wont even notice him when he retires lol

i was most saddest win fedor retired. as more time goes on, what the fighters did, who was there to actually witness it, the legacy, all of it fades into obscurity. when jones retires, it wont have as big of an impact. few people were there to watch the rise, few will still be here. watching fedor retire was like MMA basically dying a little bit for me.

Yeah Jones is only the "last of the old school" to people who never saw the actual "old school." And I don't even mean Fedor, who didn't start until 2000. Royce Gracie, Shamrock, those are the real Old School

Someday people will be all "I can't believe I'm seeing Sean OMalley retire, he's the last of the Old School"

The "he was in UFC in 08 and is a top P4P fighter in 2023" sounds more impressive than it is when you actually look at his schedule and see how many years he was inactive for

Up until 2013 he had 20 fights and was absolutely active and dominating (well didnt dominate Gus but still).

2014 - 1 fight
2015 - 1 fight (suspension, coke bings hit and run, ducked Rumble)
2016 - 1 fight
2017 - 1 fight NC (suspended)
2018 - 1 fight (Nevada wouldnt sanction Gus fight b/c of pulsing roids so they had to move event to Cali week of fight)
2019 - 2 fights (Santos split decision)
2020 - 1 fight (Reyes robbery)

"Bulks up for 3 years"

2021 - 0 fights
2022 - 0 fights
2023 - 1 fight

Hes had 9 fights in the last 10 years.... Between suspensions, jail, bulking hes been inactive for many years in that 08-23 span.

Still impressive of course but its not like he was fighting and dominating multiple times a year every year. He went from 2-3 fights a year preUSADA to barely 1 fight a year when USADA came in....<Deported1>

You're really reaching. Jones fought every year from 2008 to 2020, with 15 of those fights being title fights. And even if he had lost during that time, or had long layoffs during that time (neither of which happened, of course), the praise was that Jones is currently a top P4P fighter, which is true regardless of what happened in the interim. The impressive thing is that he's been fighting for 15 years and is STILL considered - today, right now - one of the best fighters in the UFC. He hasn't closed as an underdog in any fight since 2009, and aside from blind hope (in someone like Pavlovich, Aspinall, or Ngannou), I don't think there's anyone who would seriously and confidently bet big money against Jones no matter who his opponent is.

You're not impressed by the "top P4P fighter even after 15 years" accolade. Okay. Who's another active fighter (particularly someone in the P4P rankings) who has a similar or better record over that time?

Hate him or love him his name always brings a level of excitement very few others bring in the sport.

The crazy thing is the guy has been in the UFC since 2008. That's gotta be the longest any fighter has remained relevant and fighting top contenders.

First UFC fight was in august 2008. To think someone who was fighting in the UFC back in 2008 is the current HW champ and P4P #1 is mind boggling.

Most fighters struggle to remain relevant for 5 years, let alone be the top guy in a division for that long. And we're talking 15 years. I don't care if it's on picos or whatever shit Ronnie Coleman was on. It's impressive. Especially for a guy who likes to do cocaine with hookers on the weekend.

With that being said, Shoutout to RDA who's still ranked and has also been in the UFC since 2008.

Sad to see these guys retire any day now. The last of the "old school".

Why is it a sad day..He never fights

In my Jon’s he has already been restored he is like Connor but I blame the ufc more than them, for this

If Tom Aspinall is standing over his unconscious body it won't be.

It's not that bad, he sort of retired now. I mean the fight Stipe is pointless really, it doesn't move the needle for me in terms of his legacy if he beats him. In fact if he loses that would be detrimental.

Fight Aspinall, that's a worthy cause.

It's only sad because we will never get to see him get flatline knocked the fuck out

Crazy thing about Jones is he became the GOAT but he could accomplished so much more outside the cage. He could have been the Michael Jordan or Tiger Woods of MMA.

@Davidjacksonjones
Crying just thinking of him retiring, but he will have more time to save souls if he isn't fighting evil in the cage
Saint Jones retiring will be the saddest and also happiest day of my life. Sad because we will never witness him fight again, but also happy because he can now focus on becoming The Pope, and can dedicate all his time and effort into being a humanitarian and Catholic authority

Yep and in a few years from now, O'Malley will be "old school" too, same as Chito or Pantoja.. such is the cycle of life.

In way, maybe - and to some certainly. Overall? Probably not. He hasn't been a regular part of Mma for years, and had become so unlikable before he left that he isn't even associated with MMA more than his questionable life choices. Questionable fights aside Jon Jones for all intents and purposes should be a God Like figure in MMA. He isnt because he's a terrible person, and that matters. Could you imagine what Jon Jones career and Legacy would be if he was a Great, likable, honorable, honest, guy who relate to people instead of pissing them off? Man. Jon Jones should be right up there with Randy Couture (even thou dana continues to try and erase the guy).
