One Guy Beats Up China’s New Professional Hockey Team Pre-season game cancelled after 3 minutes
Damir Raspiyev, 21, of the Barys Astana, took a cheap shot against Kunlun’s Tomáš Marcinko. When Marcinko remained motionless on the ice, Raspiyev continued his search for a fighting partner, throwing punches at each of his opponents. When none of the Red Stars on the ice obliged him in a fight, he turned his attention to the Red Star bench and tried to provoke a fight there, but that didn’t work either. The video below is well worth watching.
Raspiyev, who has the distinction of having zero points while racking up 194 penalty minutes in 23 games, was suspended for the rest of the pre-season by the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL).
The two teams had met the previous week, when Barys’ Astana’s Dustin Boyd was injured, requiring between two and four months of rehabilitation. The team’s head coach, Andrey Nazarov, promised a “warm welcome” for the Red Stars in the following game.
The Kunlun Red Stars have reported the incident to local police.
Chinese authorities don’t have much of a stomach for excessive violence in hockey. In May 2016, Chinese player Lang Bingyu was permanently banned from ever playing hockey again by China’s winter sports authority after a particularly vicious game in Harbin. Lang elbowed a Chengde player, Hunag Peng, in the head and neck before spearing him in the mouth. Hunag lost three teeth and required 42 stitches after the incident. Lang’s coach, Liu Wen, was banned from coaching games for a year after to the incident.
The HC Beijing Kunlun Red Stars is the newest expansion team in the Kontinental Hockey League, Russia’s answer to the NHL. Officially announced during Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin’s state visit to China, the expansion team highlights China’s hockey ambitions as it prepares to host the Winter Olympic Games in 2022.
