I thing the chance of Russia using nukes is just about 0 unless actual Russian territory, i.e. not Crimea or Belarus, but if Russia itself is attacked, it's the one excuse that might do it; otherwise, a bully like Putin will back down when push comes to shove.
It's not like they can never exercise the option of simply calling it a day and withdrawing, which would presumably also end sanctions and so on. If he's got half the savvy of p. Trump he might even be able to pull off a "Look, see? I fixed the issue" message that the masses might be able to swallow if they have plenty of vodka, now affordable thanks to a suddenly improved economic situation.
Russia has to be stopped here and now to show them their nuclear blackmail is no longer going to work and any attempt to make good on it will result in everything from Moscow to Leningrad being turned to glass.
Besides, if you get your country turned into a nuclear wasteland, how are you going to hold fear of attack from the West over your people's heads as a yoke to keep you in power? Not gonna happen.
I share your feelings but I think the sanctions are never coming off.
