You know, this has been going on in one way or another for 3 years now. Not exactly news. Russia still holds 21% of Ukraine.
The real news would be how large is the current Ukrainian Army. How many soldiers is Ukraine losing a week?
I think Putin went for a war of attrition. This will take years. Russia could be much, much more aggressive in this conflict but opted for a low, and slow, profile. It does not want to stir things up more than it has to with Europe and the US. Putin is happy China and Iran are still making headlines before Ukraine.

The Ukrainian Army has to do way better than that. Oh, that is right, the Ukrainian Army is shrinking by the month. Bleeding a slow death. In the end it will have all been for nothing. Like Vietnam, Afghanistan, and Iraq for the US. Afghanistan for the Soviets (9 years). The writing has been on the wall since day one of this conflict. Bomb a target here, bomb a target there. Take over a few square kilometers here, lose the same number of square kilometers there. Nothing changes. Only thing changing is the size of the Ukrainian Army. It keeps getting smaller until it is no longer combat effective.

And for Trump, getting the US out of Ukraine and stabilizing relations with Russia are more important than achieving peace. So there will be no peace anytime soon.
