for those following this more closely: was the plane carrying POWs or weapons or not related/relevant to the war?
Not 100% sure at this point imo.
So far there has been very little evidence for Russia's claim it was carrying POW's:
to summarize:
Things pointing to Russia telling the truth:
-Ukraine first proudly announced it had shot down a Russian aircraft, and after Russian claimed it was full of Ukrainians they withdrew their claims;
-UAF claim that it was carrying S300 missiles also seems unlikely, as that would likely mean a way bigger explosion on impact.
Things point to Russian lying:
-The ratio of Russian Crew/POW seems highly unlikely: 65x POW, 6 aircrew and 3 guards (!);
-The supposed route it took was Jan 23 > Russia to Iran, then Iran > Russia on the 24th, before it got shot down, making the transport of arms seem more likely than that of POW taking a holiday trip,
-Russia released a list of POW's that were killed, somehow it contained some 15 (?) POWs that were already released, making it seem like they are just making stuff up again (whats new),
-From the crash video it seems like the plane was headed away from Ukraine which would be weird if it was containing POW's heading for Ukraine although this could be explained by the plane manouvering after beeing hit;
-Footage from the crash site, from Pro-Russian sources, shows very little in terms of human casualties, which could pretty much be able to prove their claims without much doubt.
So i'd put my money on Russia lying (what's new).
And if we're talking about who is to blame for this then surely Russia. Even if it was holding POW's if i'm not mistaking you're supposed to mark / identify vehicles and camps holding POWs
minor edit: most of this is based on unverified stuff online, so it's a guessin game in that regard.
