International Russia/Ukraine Megathread V15

Why would Russia be flying POWs around? Seems more like a convenient lie from the country that literally cannot tell the truth.
Seem kinda weak attempt to say

"yeah ok, you hit me, but on reality you hit yourself!"

On reality i understand the need to play down Ukranian achievement if indeed they destroyed bunch of new shining iranian weapons, but make up it was even POW transport to pretend they went full uno reverse card is kinda overkill even for bullshit war propaganda

Not 100% sure at this point imo.
So far there has been very little evidence for Russia's claim it was carrying POW's:

to summarize:

Things pointing to Russia telling the truth:
-Ukraine first proudly announced it had shot down a Russian aircraft, and after Russian claimed it was full of Ukrainians they withdrew their claims;
-UAF claim that it was carrying S300 missiles also seems unlikely, as that would likely mean a way bigger explosion on impact.

Things point to Russian lying:
-The ratio of Russian Crew/POW seems highly unlikely: 65x POW, 6 aircrew and 3 guards (!);
-The supposed route it took was Jan 23 > Russia to Iran, then Iran > Russia on the 24th, before it got shot down, making the transport of arms seem more likely than that of POW taking a holiday trip,
-Russia released a list of POW's that were killed, somehow it contained some 15 (?) POWs that were already released, making it seem like they are just making stuff up again (whats new),
-From the crash video it seems like the plane was headed away from Ukraine which would be weird if it was containing POW's heading for Ukraine although this could be explained by the plane manouvering after beeing hit;
-Footage from the crash site, from Pro-Russian sources, shows very little in terms of human casualties, which could pretty much be able to prove their claims without much doubt.

So i'd put my money on Russia lying (what's new).

And if we're talking about who is to blame for this then surely Russia. Even if it was holding POW's if i'm not mistaking you're supposed to mark / identify vehicles and camps holding POWs

minor edit: most of this is based on unverified stuff online, so it's a guessin game in that regard.
Thanks so we should just wait for facts to be checked and confirmed a bit longer before buying what Russia or Ukraine are selling.

That plane is a cargo plane, not passenger. but

Why the hell was it so close to Ukraine anyway.

Why fly a non-military plane into enemy air space unless you are carrying passengers?
And why no communication about an incoming flight?

Someone on one side or the other is going to be seriously fucked. Either a giant mistake by Russia or Ukraine. Seen too many of these stories flip flop to make any kind of a guess now. It'll come out eventually. If there's that many people on board like Russia claims, there will be body parts everywhere.

Allegedly video from the scene.

Not one body in sight.

The current trend seems to indicate that airspace that Russia once believed to be safe is no longer safe. This could be because of F-16s arriving or more aggressive use of the Patriot or other long range AA missile systems they may have been provided.. No one knows for sure yet.

They've lost several advanced fighters and surveillance aircraft in recent weeks as well. Several SU-34s (Their most advanced fighter aircraft operating at scale), an A-50 surveillance aircraft and an Il-22 aerial command aircraft. The last two in particular are very high value in both dollars and capability, but most importantly expertise. They would have had very high ranking officers and highly skilled radar and radio specialists that can't easily be replaced.

It's like the Russian's let their quarterback get sacked in the aerial battle.

Putin Allies Face Crisis As They Run Out of Water

A picture shows damage at a storm-hit seafront in Crimea's largest city of Sevastopol on November 27, 2023. Heavy snowfall near Sevastopol has led to a shutdown of the city's water supply on Tuesday and Wednesday as authorities work to clean the water purification systesms.

"The water supply for the Crimean city of Sevastopol will be shut off on Tuesday and Wednesday due to significant pollution in the area, according to the city's Russian-appointed authorities.

Sevastopol Gov. Mikhail Razvozhayev said in a post to his Telegram channel on Monday that the city's water supply has been contaminated due to heavy snowfall in recent days. After the snow melted, a "sharp influx of dirty water" was carried into the Chorna River, Razvozhayev explained, contaminating the city's drinking water and causing local officials to need to shut down water treatment facilities to clean their systems.

"Due to the rise of rivers and mudflows, the level of water turbidity has sharply increased," Razvozhayev wrote in his post, adding that the water has become "almost 60 times dirtier" due to the snowfall. Water will be shut off between 11 a.m. Moscow Standard Time (MSK) (3 a.m. ET) Tuesday until 8 p.m. MSK Wednesday.

"This forced shutdown of the system, necessary for the accumulation and sanitary purification of water, will allow us to provide water as normal on the evening of January 24th," Razvozhayev wrote. "If we continue to supply water periodically, the process may drag on for a week or more. I ask everyone to treat the situation with understanding."

This is what happens when money meant for infrastructure goes into someone's Dacha instead.

Belgorod is 40km from the border. Around 80km from the center Kharkiv.
Both the Patriot or the old soviet S-300 would have no trouble shooting it down.
They also have the Iris-T mounted on trucks with a 40km range, so they could take potshots from the border.
Barring the implausible prisoner exchange story Russia did something very stupid flying there.
They probably thought all the anti air assets were concentrated near Kyiv.

Yes, that's one of the theories recently, Ukraine has been moving longer range AA assets around to hit Russians in areas they previously thought were safe and have been pretty successful.

Seems very likely American surveillance assets are assisting with these sorts of attacks.

Yes, both A 50 and Il 22 always does have very highly skilled and experienced crews difficult to replace. Also despite IL 22 is cheap and very old model, it is trustable airplane , therefore is used to carry very expensive radioelectronics equipment....

Some leaked in internet pictures with damaged tail might be fake or real ones or real and still doctored images.

Anyway from " leaked " pics looks that damage had been done by S-200 missile detonating in relatively long distance from airplane....

" Russia would continue to fight with Ukraine for as long as Ukraine will exist as a separate state."
Dmitry Medvedev, the Deputy Secretary of the Security Council of Russia.

Imho both sides are lying....
Especially Russia.

65 prisoners transport never does have just only 3 security guards...NEVER....!!!!
Especially if prisoners are transported by airplane....!!!

While russia is telling that airplane had 6 +3 +65 ppl on board and for IL 76 standard crew is 5-6 ppl and these doesn't have business to handle prisoners etc..their task is to transport cargo ....to deal with airplane...

Russia is lying day and night. For example recently telegram channels had spread info that one leutenant colonel had died in Ukraine while this guy never had been in Ukraine and died in his hometown.

Disinformation and trolls farms are common tool used by Kremlin.

Il 76 is easy to shot down. It is large and clumsy cargo airplane so for such target ukr imho will not use any more or lesser modern missile...

IRIS-T is highly usable to deal with Kalibr missiles etc type of stuff. Ukr also does have limited number of them....

With Il 76 even manufactured in 1970 ies S 300 missile old version, any BUK or even KUB will deal easy peasy....with 0 problems.

Estonia.
" There are multiple forms of aid Ukraine is recieving and only one from these are collective assitance bills filled by EC...
Therefore individual assistance can't be impacted by EC / EP voting results and we had signed 1 200 000 000 EUR bill and Ukr will recieve this even if Orban will vote to veto collective assistance bill. "....
