Ukraine wasn't going to join NATO or host foreign military bases. They wanted to join the EU for the economic benefits at the expense of Russia's own economic union.
Ukraine had already completed 3 of the 5 steps needed to join NATO.
If they weren't going to join, they shouldn't have taken the bluff that far. They only have themselves, the United States and the UK to blame for how bad this all turned out.
The invasion never had to happen as Russia was seeking a guarantee of neutrality and an end to the bombing Ukraine agreed to stop in the Donbas.
If they had kept their word in the Minsk agreements and not tried to join NATO, they would have kept all territory and had no loss of life.
The invasion could have ended quickly, but Zelensky backed out of a
signed peace deal made a month into the war at the behest of Boris Johnson.
If they kept their word from the peace deal signed in Turkey, the DPR and LPR would be independent states, but very little life would have been lost.
Since they kept deciding to violate and back out of their agreements, Russia has annexed Donetsk, Lugansk, Kherson and Zaparozhia. The Russians now have a land bridge to Crimea.
Do you see the pattern? The longer they wait to negotiate and continue making agreements in bad faith, the worse bargaining position they find themselves in. They should negotiate now while they still can. If they don't negotiate soon, Russia will keep taking territory and eventually Odessa. If that happens, then for all intents and proposes, Ukraine will be a landlocked rump state.
They can't win and their negotiating position only gets worse the longer this goes on. The average age of a Ukrainian soldier is 43 at this point. When is enough enough?
