I've heard some senior analysts in Washington mention this: Ukraine can't do combined arms like a Western country (and to be fair, how many Western countries have shown themselves capable of doing so on a large scale? It's a list of 1 nation) and, anyway, don't have the air superiority that the U.S. would count on to make such a scenario work.
Ukraine is a USSR successor military at heart; they are good at artillery warfare, but (as you say) have also proven themselves to be flexible and creative on the battlefield. Let's listen to what they think they need and what kind of fight they think can get them the win. Not uncritically, but with an open mind. It's honestly heartening to hear people in Washington saying this, and I'm pretty sure some people in the administration hear them.
It's kind of funny that the NATO guys thought they had the winning strategy for defeating Russia instead of the Ukrainians who have been fighting Russia since 2014.
