I moved here last December. I am English. I moved from the UK although I have lived in Italy, Mexico, Germany, Ukraine, and Panama as well. The stereo types we have been fed about Russia are hilarious but just don't hold up.
But you carry on.
I lived nearly 8 years in Russia, in the real Russia! I lived a year in the Smolensk oblast in a town of 30k people and lived the rest in Ivanovo Oblast close to the capital. I spend a lot of time in Nizhny Novgorod and in Yaroslawl. Visited Astrakhan may times and also Murmansk. Moscow and Pieter I dont have to mention deeper as it should be clear that ive been there as well many times.
I was a guest lecturer at different Universities and hold classes for freshman as well as for senior classes (no, im not a prof, im in private business specialized in logistics/supply chain for big manufacturing plants).
Moreover, I speak Russian (studied st Uni) to a degree that I went there to watch local movies in the cinema, listened russian radio, had friend groups of only Russians, went to their dacha with them, went camping, sang songs, had great druzhba, love, everything.
And I can tell with all the love I have for the country and the people - most stereotypes are absolutely real and for most parts it was even worse than I expected it to be.
I dont know where you are but I guess either Moscow or Pieter and as you speak no russian you have only access to the educated ones who are mostly also having a more open and tolerant view, and better life in general, and therefore you have no clue what the real russia and real russian people are.
