Romeo Must Die is a 2000 American action film directed by Andrzej Bartkowiak in his directorial debut, and features fight choreography by Corey Yuen. The film stars Jet Li, Aaliyah (in her film debut), Isaiah Washington, Russell Wong, DMX, and Delroy Lindo. The film marks Aaliyah's only film that was released during her lifetime, before she was killed in a plane crash one year later on August 25, 2001. The plot is loosely related to William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, transplanted to contemporary Oakland with Black-American and Chinese-American gangs representing the feuding families.
Frustrated by the lack of originality in Hollywood action films, producer Joel Silver built the film around Hong Kong action films. He cast established Hong Kong actor Jet Li following his role in Lethal Weapon 4. R&B singer Aaliyah was cast and sang the soundtrack's lead single "Try Again" which topped the US Billboard Hot 100.
Romeo Must Die was released by Warner Bros. Pictures in the United States on March 24, 2000, where it received mixed reviews from critics, but was a box office success, grossing $91 million against a production budget of $25 million. The film was considered Li and Aaliyah's breakthrough in Hollywood.
Did you watch Fist of Legend? This x 100%. Russell Wong was great in a show in the 90's called Vanishing Son. Those who don't know or remember it was a block of shows as part of the Action Pack along with Hercules and Xena: Warrior Princess. As far as the movie goes I liked the movie but I don't really care for Jet Li.
It will sound biased but after watching martial arts films from dubbed Chinese 70's films, 80's Van Damme and Hong Kong films to mid 90's films like Rumble in the Bronx I always felt like Jet Li films were kind of a downgrade.

To be fair, Fist of Legend is goat level for me. But that didn't stop me from liking this movie.Didn't care for it. I used to buy bootleg movies on CD (yes, CD) in Montreal's Chinatown and was a huge Jet Li fan. Going from movies like Fist of Legend to Romeo Must Die was a huge letdown.
I agree. I really liked him in Vanishing Son , but he never really took off.I watched it only to see the fight between Jet and Russell Wong, though the football game was a fun scene. Russell Wong never got the break in Hollywood that i thought he deserved.
I would say it was Lethal Weapon 4 put him in the American cinema landscape. Not a good movie, but the scene with him kicking Mel Gibson and Danny Glover's collective ass made me look up his other roles.I spose Fist of Legend ended up being what really sold him in the US so he ended up much more of a Bruce Lee style badass as a result.
This just proves @NoSmilez theory that Asian actors were treated like androgynous/friendzone characters.
I think Fist of Legend is probably what Hollywood was watching casting him in that film though yet its really not a typical Jet Li kind of role.I would say it was Lethal Weapon 4 put him in the American cinema landscape. Not a good movie, but the scene with him kicking Mel Gibson and Danny Glover's collective ass made me look up his other roles.
Fucking hell bratha. In 1993 or something I lost my kung fu teacher Wong Fei Hong movie’s VCR with Jet Li. Awesome movie in Chinese btw where bad guy fights with a wet towel. Anyways had to go to chinatown to find it and rip it on another VCR…Didn't care for it. I used to buy bootleg movies on CD (yes, CD) in Montreal's Chinatown and was a huge Jet Li fan. Going from movies like Fist of Legend to Romeo Must Die was a huge letdown.
It would have been better if they shared a quick kiss, but the hug ending kind of works too. Han just saw his crooked dad commit suicide and Trish's dad is laying on the ground all fucked up, so wouldn't make sense if they just started making out. It's still very clear that they're walking away as a couple.
So yeah, asian brotha can't get no love but it's not as bad as Kiss of the Dragon or some of Jet Li's other movies, or the Replacement Killers where Chow Yun Fat can't get it up for Mira Sorvino because he must be teh gay or possibly a ladyboy. Shit as @NoSmilez pointed out, they even used the same dude to not get with Jodie Foster in Anna and the King lol.
I had forgotten about Replacement killers. Mira Sorvino had nice legs in that film

Loved that movie...and yeah CYF's character was totally blue-balled
