Movies Romeo Must Die (2000)

They can get the girl. They just need to die like Bruce Lee. Glenn from walking dead etc etc.

Oh the other alternative is the girl dies too.

I remember being excited about this because I liked that 1990s TV show "Vanishing Son" with Russell Wong. Also shortly before this I had just discoverd Jet Li and other HK action movies.

I ended up being disappointed in how it was basically a silly comedy. I thought based on the trailer it was gonna feel more like a John Woo movie, or like the Vanishing Son show.

I enjoyed seeing it at the theater 25 years ago and I still enjoy it. Thought Anthony Anderson was hilarious as Maurice.

7.2/10

Was this the one with DMX going around the gang making them say their cheer word "Faith?" Cringey.

I watched it when it came out. At the time, it was one of the greatest movies of all time, LOL. I remember hyping the shit out of it to my friends. Haven't watch it since then. Today, it probably doesn't hold up.

(But I do fondly remember the two Asian hoes the little brother was with in the club at the beginning.)

The worst place you could possibly imagine, a place darker and more gross than Hell itself, I cant even bring myself to speak its horrible name, its so unsettling...

I had a feeling something was off. It was way too clean.

pretty fun movie imo. though looking back its kinda odd how they made jet li and dmx a pair. they had them star in cradle 2 the grave like the next year. then poor dmx had to act with steven seagal lol

In the early 2000s there was kind of a rap ninja thing going . Got a buncha movies and that stupid Def jam game.

It's pretty messed up that the test audience couldn't accept Jet Li kissing Aaliyah in the end so they had to reshoot it to Jet Li hugging Aaliyah awkwardly like an incel

Apart from that it's a very enjoyable action movie. Jet Li was a big deal in action movies in the early 2000s with bangers like Romeo Must Die, Cradle to the Grave, The One, Kiss of the Dragon, Unleashed and War

It would have been better if they shared a quick kiss, but the hug ending kind of works too. Han just saw his crooked dad commit suicide and Trish's dad is laying on the ground all fucked up, so wouldn't make sense if they just started making out. It's still very clear that they're walking away as a couple.

So yeah, asian brotha can't get no love but it's not as bad as Kiss of the Dragon or some of Jet Li's other movies, or the Replacement Killers where Chow Yun Fat can't get it up for Mira Sorvino because he must be teh gay or possibly a ladyboy. Shit as @NoSmilez pointed out, they even used the same dude to not get with Jodie Foster in Anna and the King lol.

I remember it being pretty cheesy, but I haven't seen it since it came out lol.
Been probably a decade or more since I'v seen it but I think it arguably belongs with a lot of the post Matrix(or post Blade) HK martial arts crossover films of the era, can have some decent action in it but tends to be very much "of its time".

I actually think a lot of the best HK/Hollywood crossovers come from a bit before that, films like Hard Target or the 90's Drive and I spose most successfully Rush Hour(although I think its a bit blander than those two) which have more of the fun quirkiness of HK rather than aiming at rather cheesy gangster/nu metal "cool".

Its a bit strange really that Jet Li in the Hollywood really was not at all similar to most of his career in Asia wer he tended more towards the "wise master" kind of roles as in Once Upon A Time In China, I spose Fist of Legend ended up being what really sold him in the US so he ended up much more of a Bruce Lee style badass as a result.

Ironically Donnie Yen has arguebly gone the opposite direction, his HK career he was very often a Bruce Lee style badass but his latter day Hollywood roles tend to be a bit more "wise master".
