Robert Whittaker on Loss to DDP: "This is the Wakeup Call I Needed.".

Honestly Whittaker was going against a weak pool of fighters and coasted since losing title. He beat all of them but I think it's sort of like if I beat up unskilled college freshman and go undefeated, and think I'm unstoppable until I hit a guy on my level.

If he puts more into training I could see him bounce back, he's looked less deadly since losing title and willing to coast to decision. He needs that killer instinct again.

People will disagree maybe, but middleweight is kind of a shit division outside the top 5/6. You have guys who look talented initially then absolutely fall apart when they go up the rankings. I swear this happens way more at middleweight than like any other division.
Sounds like half the "new breed" of lightweights to me lately.

Robert is young in age but 30+ fights are a LOT of fights. Not to mention all the damage he took in the Romero fights and the losses he had. He got lit the f up by Wonderboy, Izzy and recenly by DDP.

The first time was after he lost his title he said that was the wake up call he needed, & he hadn't been ready for what it meant to be champ until he had it taken away. So that woke him up. Now he's saying he needed this as a wake up call. It soundz like a good sports therapist is in order so that he can keep himself woke.

It's easy to say that when two guys have been running the division for a decade. They're saying it about Featherweight right now and did with Aldo when he was dominant in the past. The same was said about Middleweight when Silva did it. I think saying it's shit is a bit hyperbolic. It isn't the best out of all the divisions but it isn't terrible by any means.

Mw is going through a transitional phase alright, but it had peaked previously post Silva reign with a remarkable golden era; so its hard to compare against that period (Rockhold, Weidman, Belfort, Jacare, Romero, Bisping, Machida, Mouse, Kennedy)

I think Rob's biggest problem is still he's lost to Izzy twice. Its difficult to sell a 3rd fight.

I know he's had a lot of fights for early 30s, but I don't buy he's in decline just because he lost. In MMA, guys lose sometimes when they consistently fight top 5ish opponents. Du Plessis is only the 2nd guy to beat him at MW in 9 yrs

Nothing against Robert, but it's DDP time... plus I would rather see Izzy vs DDP over Whittaker III...

God, I hope not.

His style, and even breathing, are atrocious to watch.

His striking is horrific, and I know he had trouble with his sinuses (supposedly fixed now), but re-watching the Whittaker fight du Plessis has possibly the ugliest style to watch I've ever seen in MMA.

Yes, Dricus appears to be a powerful man, but I don't think he has a chance in hell of beating Izzy, or especially Alex Pereira, should Alex decide to still compete at MW.

Whitaker full on saying Strickland isn't worthy of the next title shot. LMAO.

Concur.

Sean Strickland has an even uglier style than Dricus du Plessis, and also has a worse record.

du Plessis at least conducts himself like a gentleman and a class act.

I would rather see a class act like du Plessis being Champion, than a weird mouthy man-child like Sean Strickland.

du Plessis also has a better shot at being Champion.

i believe whittaker can come back more dangerous. I have never seen him taken down so easily before, it was pretty strange to see

I hope he’s not on the decline but I fear he probably is , his next fight will tell the tale

Unfortunately thats when you know you're starting to be past it. You get hit once and everything you trained for goes out the window.

I knew it was over once i saw Rob's despondent face in the corner at the end of the first round. Same look he had after the first round of the first Adesanya fight.

The interview gives the vibe that he's one foot out
- No Plan B if the opponent figured out your style
- Cardio appeared suspect over the fight while he seems focused on video games while he might spend also lots of time parenting
- Already two losses to Adesanya and 1 loss to Du Plessis that will likely hold the belt for the next year (Adesanya will beat Strickland and if Du Plessis beats Adesanya, there will be a rematch). So, Whittaker is unlikely to have a title fight soon and will have to fight someone like Dolidze or another up-and-comer as he already fought Vettori and Cannonier
May be he could try to have the fight with the winner of Chimaev vs Costa on top of the up-and-comer. His path to title contention is long

War Whittaker but he can't take the same damage he used to be able to withstand imo

He will be back, he has so much skill and talent, I was shocked at the way the DDP fight went, but I still believe Rob has more skill and can win a rematch, he did look flat when they fought recently.
