Robert Whittaker on Loss to DDP: "This is the Wakeup Call I Needed.".

Robert is a great guy and I think he can come back and finish all those guys, he's that good. When he said "I want to finish my career never losing again" that got me worried a bit, I don't want a GSP 2.0 with this guy.

Reality is he hasn't finished a opponent in 6 years and his style, although very effective, has morphed into something safer. He was lethal earlier in his career, now not so much. Same thing happened when GSP lost to Serra, and became ultra safe, while being ultra dominant. No risk taking.

I wish him the best, and that he can summon what made him The Reaper in the first place, crisp striking with letal intentions. I hope we can see this Robert again.

The guys he fought had been in 120 fights and been finished by strikes six times. Two of them never by strikes and two of the remaining four have never been stopped at Middleweight. Complacency isn't why he didn't finish them.
Made my point so much better than I did.

I always enjoy hearing Rob’s perspective. Super humble dude, I wish him nothing but the best

Whether he goes on a run or not after this loss, Robert is one of the nicest, classiest guys in the entire sport. When he says here that it hurts him that he let his fans, family and coaches down, I truly believe he feels that way and it's bothering him. Maybe that motivation will help him going forward. No way to tell. He's only 32, but he's got a ton of mileage on him.

truth. Rob is a total class act.

Rob is a great fighter but he gets hurt in a lot of fights and it caught up with him. Normally amazing recovery though. Unfortunately doesn't really have the power or subs to get guys out easily and he's only getting older.

I def believe him about not showing up mentally to the fight. When he really shows up he looks extra sharp, like against Gastelum.

Having said that I think that even a fully-focused Whittaker struggles and probably loses to DDP because of how predictable his style has become.
DDP even said it himself, the reason why he constantly kept up a high guard in the fight was because they noticed that Rob almost never goes to the body. And Rob proved them right by constantly punching and kicking the arms and hands of DDP even though the body was wide open.

Rob with a strong body offense in his arsenal would be a lot more dangerous. More openings, keeps the opponent guessing, and naturally creates a lot more openings to the head.

In my head he ducked costa

idk i have trouble seeing him beat izzy, or cumshot
Far from it, Rob has accepted every offer of the Costa fight that's been given to him.
They were "booked" to fight twice, however Costa either didn't sign the contract or just pulled out without giving any reason.

Costa did have good reasoning for not accepting the bout last time around though, basically he felt he was getting underpaid for fighting a top ranked guy and just had contract issues which the UFC weren't budging on.
Now Rob has since come out and said that he's done trying to make a fight with Costa work because he's now wasted to full camps on the preparing for the guy, but again this is mainly the UFC's fault for "booking" the bout and telling Rob that his fight is a done deal when in reality it wasn't since Costa never signed off on anything.

I was just shocked how big the discrepancy was in power and strength..

Whitakker strikes had nothing on them.. Bobby has ok power he doesn't have 1 shot KO power but he has some pop and he barely budged DDP with his strikes.

I think DDP just a strong fcker and Whitaker had no answer.

Even with the grappling DDP did whatever he wanted to and even when Whitakker got a he was just ragdolling Bobby.. was shocked by the power of DDP

This.

Rob is a good guy, but he is a broken man.

IMO, he will never again achieve top form; he will only get exposed more-and-more.

I am a big fan and I love his mindset, but he looked like shit against DDP. I take nothing away from DDP but Whittaker was just trying to force everything and looked slow in there...he has been around forever so who knows where he is at, hard climb getting back to the title now though.

I love Rob, but I don't see how he changes anything when he never really has.
The one punch at a time style that he currently employs is becoming predictable.

He hardly ever uses offensive wrestling, but when he does he's mostly successful.
It also opens his striking up, but he'll never change gym which is what I think he should do to be honest.

Not a wakeup call, it was a retirement call.

You've had a great career, now have a good life. It's a wrap.

Bobby is my boy and one of my favourite fighters all of time. Hope he makes another impressive run but I have this bad feeling in my gut about his future.
Same & I hope we’re wrong :/ Two things make me worry abt an athlete’s future:
1) Talking about getting back to “the old me”
2) Talking about needing a wake up call to get things together

Rob can serve as a gatekeeper again. Hang around in contention, maybe get a title shot, then lay it all out . Izzy unlikely to lose but if he got injured , Rob could do better against others

Am I fucking crazy or is anyone else perplexed by these people saying he’s being delusional? He literally said this is the wake up call he needed to address holes in his game and make adjustments.
