RIP GameStop

I love it

Movie theaters gouging food prices
GameStop lowballing

But most of all, the milk industry. They openly talked about how they could lobby congress to not have "high fructose corn syrup" on it's labels.

To hell with all of them

I've been to several stores and they're all having massive sales and obviously not getting new stock. Its depressing.

They're "EB Games" now. They're essentially the Canadian Gamestop though. Gamestop bought them out in the mid 2000's.
damn man I remember EB games, but I used to fuck with Game Crazy because they would literally give you almost 2x what gamestop would. But man I hope they don't go under because its like the only place where you can get used switch games at a reasonable price without having to fuck around on craigslist or ebay

Gamestop has been dying for close to a decade. What kept them in business this long is how far behind consoles were on digital distribution. Moment Sony/Microsoft consoles moved away from running on the disk to installation their fate was sealed. Rebranding to a mom and pop style comic book store doesnt work for a corporate entity. They even attempted to create esport viewing and training centers; which could have worked if done five years earlier.

I still believe the Esports viewing, training and tournament organization can still work. Comic book stores do well with hosting magic the gathering tournaments, so could GameStop with video games.
They could also become internet cafes as well.

Around me a well known college exists with a high admission rate of asians. Near it is a small strip mall where a hybrid internet cafe which doubles as a bar/grill would do extremely well. Problem is as an entity the Gamestop brand wont work as this.

I noticed for at least the past year unless you preorderd the game ahead of time on a launch day they wouldnt sell you a copy. Or carry any extra.
So Id usually just walk over to target and buy one of the 50 copies they had no problem having in stock.
Anyway, fuck them and their shitty trade in values.
I preordered The Old Republic and on launch day I drove to pick it up, which is 70+ miles one way. When I got there they told me they didn’t get any copies. I’d already did my shopping in the mall that day and noticed Target had it sitting on the shelf.
The Game Stop manager said they’d get a copy next week and I could come pick it up then. It took about half an hour of arguing and a cop to show up to get my money back.
The manager called the cops saying I was screaming and throwing stuff in the store. The booth owner in the aisle of the mall right outside the door said the manager was lying and he didn’t see or hear me doing those things.
That’s the last time I stepped foot in a GameStop.
Fuck em.

If the strip mall can make it work so can GameStop. I agreed, they would have to do some serious work to rebrand and market themselves, but if they partner with Esports companies and provide a need by becoming the venue of choice for for local Esport events, they would help grow the sport/scene and become synonymous with the brand.

They already have the hardest part figured out and accomplished (physical locations/venus), all they need to do is attract the people. Hell they can even still continue to sell games, but obviously that would just be one of the many products they could sell to people while they play games or use their computers.

They are closing over 1000 stores in the next 3 months. This will be now over 1700 GameStop's in the last 3 years, in the US, gone.

It's time to join Blockbuster, Toys R Us and Circuit City in the big avenue in the sky.

I rarely shopped at GameStop but it was always nice to go in at the mall when you have free time.

One of the ones near me is closing but the other is staying open.

They are having a pretty good closing sale though. Gonna keep picking up some Switch stuff and maybe a few PS4 games.

GameStop trade ins today isn’t as bad as before.

Going to trade in my PS4 for $140. Paid $200 for it about 4 years ago. Pretty good value.

Also, it’s not all stores that are shutting down. It’ll eventually go down but in another year or so.

They treat their employees like shit which sucks. They don’t get paid much and have to fight for hours. I’m surprised they’re loyal - probably because they love video games.

Yes, there's several advantages to owning physical media over digital versions. Most Blu rays/4k discs look better than their streaming counterparts, especially if you have a shit internet connection that's hobbled by bandwidth caps.

Digital versions can be delisted forever from a digital storefront with no notice whatsoever.

And if you're downloading your games, obviously hard drive space will eventually become an issue unless you delete everything once you're done with it. Of course, that goes back to bandwidth caps and it generally being a pain to re-download 50+ gigabyte games again to replay. With physical copies you can also resell them if you want.

Do many people outside of hick towns with no internet still buy physical media? Pretty sure i haven’t Bought a physical CD/DVD/Video game in like 7 years.

Some people actually like to own physical things and collect.

The casuals and people that seemingly don't give a shit about ownership and are fine with being spoonfed media have moved on to streaming.

Wouldnt be wise to partner with a esport org for local outlets. For fans arent regional down to the township level, theyre global. Activision/Blizzard are trying to do this in their franchised leagues of CDL and OWL. These two leagues are using two games out of the same venue under this model and isnt working.

Plus as a team org owner such investment heavily decreases their diversity. Joining them at the hip, relying game success as a spectator esport. Something that is heavily inflated across the board. Since the majority of games esport is run by the developers marketing budget as marketing. When you look at the top 10 esport games of 2020. Only one game esport isnt run by its game developer.
