Crime Riot+Looting in Ferguson, MO

I will never understand American culture even slightly.

Why do they worship blacks and elevate blacks to mythological status?

Kids get shot all the time and nobody cares but when they're black tens of thousands of daytime TV-watching housewives and guys in nightgown-length jerseys take to the streets with their black-themed cardboard signs.

They literally don't even know what happened or who the cop is.
Is it just a social event, an excuse to be on the internet?
Is it systematic brainwash from all the cartoonish evil white/sweet black history taught in public schools?
Is it just the natural outcome of a wealthy/soft/sheltered/gullible ethnicity becoming subservient to a more streetwise/nationalistic ethnicity?

I've lived in the US longer than any other country I've lived in but I always feel like a spectator. The dynamic of the submissive white majority, worshiped/exalted blacks and practically invisible Asians/Latinos/Natives/etc is just very strange and depressing.

Political Correctness will be our undoing.

Thanks for the review and clarification on their posting policies. From what I've seen the coverage on there is balanced and the comments are (from a PR perspective) unseemly.

Also thanks for your tip on the police stories thread. I got through a bunch and need to get back to it.

I might have missed it but I was expecting a reply about the tendencies of protests turning to riots. I thought you might have some insight.

I don't have a whole lot of experience with large protests. All of the riots I have been involved in have been smallish(100 or so people) and have been spontaneous events. Most have been after fights or shootings, and weirdly, the anger was not directed at the police as much as another group. I have had bottles thrown and one nipped my ear tip in my first such incident.

I think the people that were looting used the protests as the chance to do so, but there are always people at these types of events that are just itching for things to go to that next level. Some of the cops maybe, too. Me, I hate these situations. I get angry at the people looting and want to see them punished, but when the cops do that, I am like "You idiots, now you have just validated their accusations!"

As for that thread, I was re-reading the first volume to see if I had discussed a particular incident. There are so many pages and stories, it has taken a few days-and the stories get longer.

If you run across any good books or studies on how protesting devolves into looting please pass it along, if it occurs to you.

You've obviously never been to the South.

Lol for one it's a kid getting shot by police, that is and should be a big deal. Even a legitimate shooting should be investigated to see if any changes to procedure are needed.

As for the black thing? Yeah if this had been an unarmed white kid there'd be no need for a protest as heads would have rolled almost instantly.

Take a look at missing kids, a ton of black missing kids, no one cares, one pretty little white girl goes missing it's a national event, politicians are all over the news demanding action, new laws are enacted and money is thrown at the police to get things done.

I think this is one of the guys you are talking about:

I like Russell Brand's comedy, but I disagree with a lot of what he says in this video. He assumes that he knows the motivations of the rioters/looters as if they are some kind of "movement", fighting against police brutality, fighting against wrongfully "being profiled" by the police (as if they are goody two-toes, getting stopped/searched returning books to the library or something). blah blah. He doesn't really know what he's talking about here. I would say most of the looters/rioters really didn't even know the kid that was shot and couldn't give less of f**k about him or his family.

IMO, people constantly making excuses for this behavior are actually part of the problem.

Actually black kids die at a much higher rate than other kids and no one even blinks an eye. When little black girls are kidnapped or gone missing you don't see it on fox and in the news. But when a little white girl goes missing its the lead story every night.

There is a long history of racially motivated police brutality so events liked this are put in to that historical context. Hence the outrage.

powerful speech.

Would love Obama to come out and say something like this.

He would make a fool out of himself if he did. Can you imagine Obama making silly faces while mocking "We Shall Overcome"? Obama is the president of US, not a black leader. If he only spoke on behalf of black people and mocked civil rights marches he'd catch shit from all sides.

And how do you know what you're talking about? You're in England and assuming you know the motivations of the rioters as well. Is it possible that we all assume things and reach premature conclusions at times based on our experiences, biases, and world views?

This is my problem with incidents like this. The community always gets up in arms over the end result, but seems to overlook the circumstances that led up to the situation. The one way to avoid things like this is to act like you've got some sense and follow the law or if confronted by police, treat them with respect. There always seems to be gray area on events that lead to incidents like this.

I've been closely associated with police for over 18 years and I've never seen or heard of a police officer simply walking up to citizen and shooting them randomly. This is in Montgomery, Alabama mind you.

I agree (but may be in the minority). Most of the time, if you just co-operate with the police, they leave you alone and have no reason to aggravate you. I'm white and I live in Japan and am by definition an ethnic minority here. I have been stopped by police outside train stations a few times and asked to present my ID (maybe they suspected me of being an illegal immigrant, who knows?). I co-operated and was on my way. no problems at all.

I could have screamed and shouted, "oh, you are only stopping me cause I'm white, this is racial profiling!!" (which would have actually been true!!) and given them attitude, but I didn't, because I don't like to act like a petulant kid.

I've also been stopped by police in London in the wake of the London bombings, again I co-operated and was on my way. However, I remember one of my classmates at the time (who was Indian) telling me that he got stopped by police and he kicked up a fuss screaming "racial profiling". It's ridiculous. Again, most of the time, if you just co-operate with police, they leave you alone.

Admittedly, I'm basing my opinion on the London/British riots that happened a couple of years back. With Mark Duggan getting shot by the police and people looting and rioting across England.

But, logically speaking, "I'm going to steal some nike sneakers because the police shot a kid" doesn't really make any sense.

I didn't mean VERBATIM. But, made "similar" speech to try and inject a bit of reason and logic into "destroying your own community".

Yeah, you being a white guy in Japan definitely makes you qualified to make sweeping generalizations about the African American experience.

That's the only part of out a 6 minute video he could reasonably incorporate in a speech, every other part would make him look like a fool tbh.
