Rickson Gracie FAQ

Rickson DID smoke marijuana, that's well known. He was a beach rat and a surfer in his teenage years, what did you expect. I haven't heard anything about him doing it these days though, but if he does do it occasionally, I wouldn't be surprised or thing it is a big deal. As far as I know, casual marijuana use is beneficial.

Not as harmful as once thought but far from being beneficial. Other than its usage as an anti-emetic or a glaucoma remedy I don't see where you got that from.

I have never read about any beneficial or protective effects of cannabis. Only limited therapetic uses.

Ok please I want you to answer a hard question ... who would win in an ADCC tournament?

Rickson Gracie vs Eddie Bravo

With the age they actually have because in pure grappling age, size, weight, height don't matters.

AH HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA.....

Who would win in a one-on-one game, Michael Jordan or the burn-out serving burgers at the McDonald's down the street?

There's actual medical evidence that daily users of marijuana have certain areas of the brain that are smaller than non users.

Rolls did not die right after rickson was able to tap him, he died like 4 years after rickson first tapped him, and here is a version of that story that i heard:

Rolls was family champ (along with carlson but carlson was starting to get passed his prime) and no doubt until rickson was about 17 Rolls was raping everyone in the family including Rickson. Apparently Rolls was basically an atheletic genious rather than a pure bjj genious; meaning he could do well in any sport such as soccer ect along with combat sports. The man was a natural at almost anything. But Rolls was renaissance man with many interests and would do other things out side of jiu jitsu. But he would always be able to come in during class every once in a while; stretch and tap anyone out.

When rickson was 17~19(?), he really started to take jiu jitsu seriously. He lived in the gym and started doing all the other extra stuff needed to become good in jiu jitsu. Rolls didn't train nearly as much as he used to because he had other interests. So one day rolls comes into class, stretches and starts sparring with rickson. Everyone in the gym stops sparring and watches the two go at it. Finally rickson takes roll's back and chokes him. Helio (who was there when this happened) quickly starts the next roll going; saying to people "you go with him, you go with him, ect..". He basically tries to make sure not to make a big thing about it. He didn't congratulate Rickson and he didn't crown him family champion because of that win.

Now Rickson said that he knew that that tap meant nothing. For he knew that Rolls could just train for a few weeks and continue to rape him like he did before. But what made Helio crown rickson was not the fact that he tapped rolls once. But the fact that Rolls NEVER asked Rickson to roll after that day. And after a year or two of rolls not rolling with rickson, Helio finally said "Ok, now you are family champion."

I have NEVER heard that story before. I'll run it by some people I know, see what I hear. I find it possible for Rickson to have tapped Rolls in training: everyone gets tapped in training. Rickson's first fight was against Zulu when he was only 18. From then on he was the family champion.

Rolls was in fact a gifted athlete, that is true. He was a phenomenal freestyle wrestler (by the Brazilian standards of the time) and actually was part of the national team that was being formed before the Olympics fiasco. I would have to check the biography again but I think it was a mixture of the boycott to the olympics and some sort of internal fighting that led to the team not going. Rolls was close to being an olympic wrestler ( for Brazil, yeah, but still :) ), and if I'm not mistaken, so was Rickson.

rickson fought zulu because he was de fact family champion.

Here is a detail about Andre Galvo and Rickson that i heard:

This was in japan when andre and the bunch of brasa guys were training at a gym and rickson was there also (in his street clothes). It wasn't like andre and rickson had a jiu jitsu match and rickson won. When andre says that rickson is the best he has ever seen this is why:

Rickson saw andre training/sparring with someone and sees some aspect of andre's mount that can be improved. Rickson says to andre something like "hey, i think that i have some details that would help you if you want and would let me." ofcourse andre says "yes, please tell me". So rickson tells andre to do x y z differently. Rickson starts talking to someone and when he looks back at andre, andre isn't really getting what rickson told him. So me puts on his gi and goes to andre "mount me". Andre mounts him and rickson shrimps him back to guard. Andre is like "WTF??". So they do this several times and rickson escapes mount every time. now rickson says "i'll mount you and you try to escape". Andre can't even move. He gets cross choked repeatedly and they stop and rickson and andre go over the details of the mount position.

That's why in the famous interview where he was asked "did you spar with rickson?.... could you move?" Andre replied with "yes.. my eyes".

Now, it's not like rickson took him down and passed his guard. BUT this shows the high technical comprehension of rickson gracie when it comes to jiu jitsu.

Another great story. I love the whole, "yes...my eyes."

In Saulo JJ University book, Xande demonstrate the arm bar that Rickson used several time on him.

Like who?

I think CroCop, Fedor, Brock, Cain, Karelin, Carwin, basically anyone with great takedown defense would have a shot. But not much of one. We have to understand that by fighting and winning today your "style" gets out to the masses and people can gameplan.

Shit, Keith Hackney gave Royce a run for his money back in the day utilizing a sprawl n brawl tacking and he had 0 wrestling as far as i know.

IIRC Keith DID have wrestling experience... High School at least from old interviews...

Thanks a lot for all the time put into this, definitely the best thread on sherdog and one of the most informative threads of any forum I read.

I just watched Choke the other night and was extremely impressed by Yuki Nakai(sp?). He actually went blind in his right eye and didn't say anything about it for years so that it wouldn't reflect poorly on the sport. I honestly didn't know how well he did in the tournament before watching the documentary(except that he beat Gordeau) and when I saw he was only 135lbs I thought it was ridiculous he was being put in with guys twice his size who really "should" have killed him. That guy had Heart. Extremely motivational, and ironically he seemed to embody Gracie Jiu Jitsu even more than Rickson by beating guys who outweighed him by 100lbs with his grappling.

Yuki Nakai is now a brazilian jiu jitsu black belt in his own rite and head of his own gym in Japan; Paraestra. One of my own Heroes of MMA.

One difference i've noticed between american and brazilian run schools is that americans seem to think its more about the moves. Who knows this move or that move. But the brazilians think more about the leverage behind the move. The actual science of it.

And thats what rickson specializes in, he just really understands leverage and applying it to the human body

You mean Yuki "The Giant Killer, President of the JBJJF, founder of Paraestra, master of Shinya Aoki, the bravest MMA fighter I"ve ever seen, the one who lied about being blind not to damage the sport" Nakai?

No. Helio said that Rolls was too much for tZulu and wanted to test Rickson. As an 18 year old kid and not the family champion, he wasn't putting too much at stake. Plus he firmly believed in Rickson's ability to win the match.

Which he did.
